Joyce Duckworth found the craft that has become her signature - basketry - 18 years ago. She gravitated toward basketry, she says, because she enjoyed the conventions offered in Kentucky that she attended. It is a challenging medium, too. "There's always a new technique to learn," she notes. That is easy to discern from the neatly written notes that accompany the baskets at the Boyle County Public Library in the Gathering Artist-sponsored exhibit this month. Take the work with a lighthouse in the middle, which Duckworth says took her about four hours to make.

Just like Batman would be nothing without Robin, the Daniel Boone Pioneer Festival would be nothing without vendors for the arts and crafts booths. Two states other than Kentucky - Ohio and Tennessee - will be represented with vendors, and this year's arts and crafts booths at the Pioneer Festival. This year, 120 booths will be set up with items such as jewelry, hand-made paper and soaps, framed needlework, aprons, doll clothes, fine furniture and photography. The booths will be set up around College Park and for the third year, in the College Park Gymnasium.

LIBERTY - A parade, tree lighting, arts and crafts, entertainment, and shopping will be part of a two-day celebration Dec. 5-6 to open the Christmas holidays. "A Celebration of Liberty" is the theme of the parade that will march through the downtown section at 7 p.m. Dec. 5. The parade will assemble at 5:30 p.m. at Gate Way Park, and entries will be judged at 6:15 p.m. The parade will feature Santa Claus. Floats and non-float divisions will be judged. Cash prizes will be given in each category.

To the editor: September is National Senior Center Month. The Jessamine County Senior Center is stepping up to celebrate with a month of seminars, classes, trips and music to showcase what the center has to offer our community. As a multi-purpose center, the senior center shows its spirit with “We Want You” membership campaign. Being a member of the center is free and offers transportation, arts and crafts, many different kinds of classes and wellness programs.

LIBERTY - An all-day event, "Arts in the City," to show off arts and crafts by local people and to open the doors to the new City Hall on Middleburg Street Saturday will conclude with performances by Casey County high and middle school students. Events begin at 10 a.m. for an art show and dedication of the new City Hall. Performances at 12:30 p.m. will feature singer Iva Pennington and at 3 p.m. the Bill Lester Band. An array of arts and crafts will be for sale at City Hall and on the lawn throughout the day. A performance at 7:30 p.m. by the middle and high school dancers also will feature singing by Charissa Gosser and McKinsey Campbell.

Bethel to hold gospel singing Bethel Christian Church will hold a gospel singing at 5 p.m., Nov. 14. The event will feature different performers. Singers and musicians are invited to participate. Boyle County 4-H Rally Days will be July 26-28 at the Boyle County Extension Office and youth can enter projects in more than 300 classes to earn cash, ribbons, and the chance to compete against other youth from across Kentucky at the State Fair in August. Any youth age 9-18 (as of January 1, 2010) is eligible to enter any of the dozens of categories available. Cloverbuds ages 6-8 may also exhibit projects, but their entries may not compete at the state fair. Youth do not have to be current members of 4-H to participate.

Transylvania University Anderson Salinas of Danville recently participated in Transylvania University's 17th annual Crimson Christmas philanthropic event. Salinas, a graduate of Danville High School and first-year student at Transylvania, is the son of Susan Salinas of Danville. Transylvania's Office of Residence Life and Big Brothers/Big Sisters of the Bluegrass sponsored Crimson Christmas to provide 50 children with a holiday-filled afternoon. Children paired up with students from each residence hall to attend a carnival with booths hosted by a variety of Transylvania organizations.

It's the most wonderful time of year again in Wilmore as the city hosts the 24th annual Old Fashioned Christmas. “We're really excited about this year's event,” said Amy Fitch, director of Wilmore's parks and recreation. “It starts with the pancake breakfast as usual, but there are even more arts and crafts tables this year, more than normal.” On Saturday, Dec. 1, the Wilmore Lions Club pancake breakfast kicks off a jam-packed day of events at 7 a.m. at The Providence School.

From paintings to woodwork, there will be something for just about everyone during the 14th annual Wilmore Arts and Craft Festival scheduled from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 1, in downtown Wilmore. Festival chairwoman Sharon Moore said the event grows every year and something new this year will be artwork with an international flavor. “We will have crafts made from people from Uganda, Kenya, the Dominican Republic and India,” Moore said. “They will display a variety of different crafts.” The festival will feature more than 50 vendors peddling their art and confection goods all day long.

SEPT. 13 Artists' reception at Gallery on Main RICHMOND - The Gallery on Main will feature a special artists' reception for “Thoughts in the Presence of Fear” from 5:30 to 7 p.m. The gallery is located inside Community Trust Bank, 128 W. Main St. The exhibit is in honor of the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks, and is based on Wendell Berry's essay, “Thoughts in the Presence of Fear.” Richmond native Tim Brumfield will perform “Reflections on 9/11,” about his experiences in New York City that day. Hand-painted saws, turkeys crafted from pine cones, and handmade quilts are a fraction of the works on display at the Forkland Arts and Crafts Show this month at the Community Arts Center. The unique pieces of art, hailing from the southwestern corner of Boyle County, create one of the most eclectic shows seen this year at the Community Arts Center. The traditions of Forkland — or “The Fork,” as natives sometimes refer to the area where Boyle, Casey and Marion counties meet — include arts and crafts created by the many people who either live there or who have close ties to the area.  The Forkland Community Artists, create works of outstanding originality in concept, subject and technique.

When the employees of Leggett & Platt decided to form a Relay for Life team, they thought the best way to raise money was to use their talents. “Some of our employees are also crafters, so they came up with the idea,” said team member Dawn Day. That idea led to the first Arts and Crafts for the Cure Festival, with 100 percent of vendor booth fees being donated to the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life. The festival will be Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the old Bundy building, 805 N. Maple St. Approximately 40 vendors who sell crafts and food have registered for the event.

For the second year in a row, the Winchester Civitan Club will partner with the Winchester-Clark County Parks and Recreation Department to sponsor a community Easter celebration. The Civitan Club began hosting a community egg hunt approximately 15 years ago, according to president-elect David Woods, and the partnership with Parks and Recreation came from a desire on the part of the department to become more active in local events. “They wanted to get more involved with things going on in the community.
