Michael and Teri Walters announce the engagement of their daughter, Ellen Walters of Lexington, to Joel Kenimer of Lexington, the son of Curtis and Kathy Kenimer of Paris, Ky. The bride-elect is a graduate of Asbury University and is employed by Jessamine County Schools. The prospective groom is a graduate of the University of Kentucky and is employed by American Income Life. The wedding will be Oct. 15 at 5:30 p.m. at Central Baptist Church in Winchester. A reception will follow at Embassy Suites.

Ten Jessamine County high-school seniors received scholarhips Monday afternoon at the Nicholasville Rotary Club's meeting at Central Bank. Harry L. Kidd Jr., age 87, of Lexington, Ky., departed this life on Feb. 19, 2013, at St. Joseph Medical Center. He was born in Vienna, Va., on Oct. 8, 1925, to the late Harry L. Kidd Sr. and Maude Alford Kidd of Fairfax County. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during World War II. He graduated from Asbury University in Wilmore, Ky. in 1951 with a Bachelor of Arts in History. He married Christine Beulah Hahn, a classmate, at Asbury on May 27, 1951. He felt a call to ministry, earning a Bachelor in Ministry degree from Westminster Seminary on May 22, 1956, while serving several churches.

Asbury University senior Gardner Adams was named the KIAC baseball pitcher of the week for the second straight week by KIAC officials on Monday, May 2. This is the fourth time this season Adams has won this award. Adams earned the win as Asbury defeated Brescia University, 5-0, on April 29. He pitched seven innings and only allowed two hits while striking out 11 Brescia hitters. The senior hurler ranks fourth in NAIA Division I in batters struck out per 9 innings (12.35) and is sixth in wins (10)

Wilmore Elementary presents musical featuring Broadway hits Wilmore Elementary School will present “Broadway Live!” Thursday, May 3, and Friday, May 4, in the school's gymnasium at 7 p.m.  The program will feature Broadway favorites from “Annie,” “The Music Man,” “Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory,” “The Sound of Music,” “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” and many others. Admission is $4 for adults and $2 for school-aged children.

West Jessamine senior Lisa Troyer signed a letter of intent last month to continue her education and volleyball career at Asbury University in the fall. Troyer, one of only two seniors on this year's team, signed with the Eagles on April 27. “The volleyball team (at Asbury) is a really great team and I'm planning on double majoring in social work and adventure leadership,” Troyer said. “Both of those (majors) are really good at Asbury as well.” The Lady Eagles are coming off a 42-11 season and a trip to the NCCAA National Tournament.

Dr. Joseph Allen Thacker, 91, surrounded by family, went to be with the Lord on Friday, May 18, in Mountain City, Tenn. Joe is a former resident of Wilmore, where he arrived with his wife, Margaret, in 1947 to attend Asbury University. He loved teaching and students, spending almost 40 years as a professor, led annual Jym Jamboree for 36 years, and was mayor of Wilmore for five years. He pastored churches, served his community, invested in lives of thousands of people and was a wonderful father to four children.

NICHOLASVILLE (KNCS) - A Jessamine Circuit Court jury awarded a former women's basketball coach nearly $400,000 last week in a civil trial against Asbury University in Wilmore. Debi Powell won the case in a unanimous verdict at the end of the trial in Nicholasville, said her attorney, Debra Ann Doss. The jury awarded Powell $300,000 for humiliation, embarrassment and emotional distress, plus $88,325 in back wages and benefits, her attorney said. “She felt finally the truth had come out and that she had been vindicated,” Doss said.

Neff, also of Wilmore. Sylvia is also the daughter of Mr. Grover P. Boykin of Lexington, S.C., and the late Mr. Dudley W. Smith Jr. of Macon. The bride-elect is the granddaughter of Mrs. Juanita Margaret Darity Watson and the late Mr. Willis Jackson Watson of Macon, the late Mr. and Mrs. Grover Boykin of Sims, N.C., and the late Mr. and Mrs. Dudley W. Smith, Sr. of Eastman, Ga. She is the great-granddaughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Willie Thomas Darity Sr. of Macon.
