Graduates Eastern Kentucky University: Merin Roseman, a graduate of Burgin High School, with degrees in English and Geograph, both summa cum laude. Roseman studied abroad in London, England and Ecuador. She was a member of Sigma Tau Delta English honor society, Phi Kappa Phi academic honor society and she served as chair of Kappa Tau Delta, a service sorority. During her junior year, she was awarded the Office of Student Life's Service Award for outstanding community service.

Jennifer Thompson, daughter of Terry and Rose Thompson of Crab Orchard was named to the the Dean's List of Honor for the spring semester 2007 at Somerset Community College. Jennifer will receive an associate degree in early childhood education next May. Once she graduates, she will attend Eastern Kentucky University to pursue a bachelor's degree. She plans on teaching preschool in either Rockcastle or Lincoln County.

Graduates Indiana Wesleyan University Derek Trout of Perryville graduated Aug. 8 from Indiana Wesleyan University's main campus in Marion, Ind., with a Bachelor of Science, Christian ministries. National College Felicia G. Ford was awarded an associate degree from the administrative office professional program from the Lexington Campus of National College. Ford is the daughter of Charles B. Ford, and Phyllis and Rodney Dunn, and is the mother of D'Yantae and Asianna.

Air Force Timothy K. McCarty has been promoted to the rank of captain. McCarty is a command and control division chief with the 36th Air Base Wing Command Post, Andersen Air Force Base, Agana, Guam. He is the son of Gail A. Reed of Bay City, Mich. His wife, Lisa, is the daughter of Marvin A. and Grace M. Michael of Perryville. The captain graduated in 1988 from Bangor John Glenn High School, Bay City, and received an associate degree from the Community College of the Air Force.

May 18, 1986 Becky Sams Winburn, wife of Greg Winburn, 808 Dixiana Drive, Colonial Valley, is a 1986 graduate of Lexington Community College with an associate degree in data processing. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Danny Sams, Dry Fork Road. Sherry Babineaux will present her piano students in a recital at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the First Presbyterian Church, Windridge Drive. Participating will be Nathan Sainte, Corey Adams, Elizabeth Tuttle, Bradlee Burtner, Hillary McCord, Adam Godlaski, Heather Holland, Angela Taulbee, Michelle Sainte, Melissa Baber, Linda Horseman, Leslie Cayton and Terri Gibbs.

Thornton-Estes Johnny and Carolyn Thornton of Harrodsburg announce the engagement of their daughter, Ann Marie Thornton, to William Michael Estes, son of Nellus and Ruby Estes of Harrodsburg. Thornton is a 1988 graduate of Mercer County High School and earned an associate degree from Sullivan College in 1990. She is employed by Trim Masters. Estes is a 1982 graduate of Danville High School and employed by City of Danville. A wedding is planned for Sept. 25 at Benton Baptist Church in Harrodsburg.

Johnny and Ruth Sims of Stanford and Johnny and Sue Rayborn of Middleburg announce the engagement and forthcoming marriage of their children, Ashley Leann Sims and Donathan Everett Wayne Rayborn. The bride-elect is a 2006 graduate of Orange Park Christian Academy in Orange Park, Fla., with an associate degree in early childhood development. She is the granddaughter of John Sims of Crab Orchard, Martha Proffitt of London and Ruby and Roy Lanigan of Putnam County, Fla. The groom-elect is a 2005 graduate of Casey County High School.

Philip Montez Howard of Winchester, passed away at 2:12 a.m. Monday May 23, 2011 at Clark Regional Medical Center. He was born May 5, 1982, to Dwain Howard Sr. and Francine Ferguson Nartey. He was a graduate of the Continental Academy and received his Associate Degree in Business Management from National College of Business, Thursday, May 26, 2011. In addition to his parents, he is survived by his grandmother, Ms. Anna Howard, three brothers; Brian Clark, Dwain Howard Jr. and Dominic Vancleve, all of Winchester, several aunts and uncles, a host of nieces, nephews and cousins and a very special friend, Deniece Williams.

The Danville Campus of National College, located at 115 E. Lexington Ave., has received a new six-year grant of accreditation to offer associate degrees and diplomas. The renewal of the college's accreditation was announced by the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools after a nearly year-long process of review. The accreditation renewal process involves a detailed application, a thorough institutional self-study, and an accreditation site visit. "A six year grant is an achievement," said Anna M. Counts, director of compliance and accreditation for National College, noting that institutions receiving a six-year renewal typically receive only a few minor citations that are quickly addressed.

Marine Corps   Pvt. Brandon W. Brock, son of Teresa L. Parsons of Hustonville, recently completed 12 weeks of basic training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, S.C. designed to challenge new Marine recruits both physically and mentally. Brock and fellow recruits began their training at 5 a. m., by running three miles and performing calisthenics. In addition to the physical conditioning program, Brock spent numerous hours in classroom and field assignments which included learning first aid, uniform regulations, combat water survival, marksmanship, hand-to-hand combat and assorted weapons training.

Kentucky plants and folk lore will be in the spotlight at the April 12 Second Thursday program at the Bluegrass Heritage Museum, 217 S. Maple St. Debbie Barnes, an Estill County native who has lived here for 37 years, will be the speaker. She has a bachelor's degree in ornamental horticulture and an associate degree in greenhouse growing and landscape design from Eastern Kentucky University, Richmond. The owner of Louis Flower Power on Harrodsburg Road for 11 years and  Louis Flower Power on Nicholasville Road for three years, she and her husband, Joe, have two children.

Chiro One opens in Nicholasville Chiro One Wellness Centers recently opened its newest clinic in Nicholasville, 624 Edgewood Drive, with Dr. Heather Fischer as clinic director. Fischer is originally from Coloma, Mich. She became a chiropractor to inspire and lead others to take an active role in their overall health and well-being and looks forward to serving Nicholasville. She attended Lake Michigan College in Benton Harbor, Mich., for her undergraduate education, earning an associate degree in applied science and later attended Grand Valley State University in Allendale, where she earned a bachelor of science in bio-medical science.

In January of 2007, Don McEwan didn't even have a high school diploma. On Saturday, he is scheduled to receive a college degree. And what makes McEwan's whirlwind rise through the academic world even more remarkable is that he is a tad older than most college students and the vast majority of their professors, too. "Around here (at the Danville campus of Eastern Kentucky University), the faculty and my fellow students call me the old geezer and I call them young whipper-snappers," the 74-year-old Lincoln County resident said with a laugh.
