It was one of the biggest decisions of Haley Robey's young life, and one that she says she hasn't regretted for a minute. Robey is approaching the end of a two-year career in high school swimming, one that wouldn't have been possible if she hadn't decided to transfer from Mercer County to Boyle County prior to her junior year. She had been swimming for some time with the Bluegrass Marlins club team but couldn't swim at the high school level because Mercer doesn't have a team. She said she made the move to Boyle to be part of the team there, and she couldn't be happier about the way it has turned out. “I'm so glad I switched,” Robey said.

They are no strangers to competitive swimming, but Connor and Sarah Burns find themselves at a new level of competition this winter. And they're finding it very much to their liking. After years of swimming with club and recreation teams, both siblings have joined the team at Boyle County for the first time. While both swimmers said high school swimming is different from what they're used to, they said it's a good kind of different. “For one thing, it's more enjoyable because you have a lot of people from school,” Connor Burns said.

Clay Bisher says becoming a nationally ranked swimmer is a fine achievement ? and a pretty good motivational tool, too. Bisher is one of the best backstroke swimmers in his age group, reaching a standard that only 0.2 percent of those involved in USA Swimming will attain. The Danville youngster, who swims for the Bluegrass Marlins, said being part of that exclusive club means a great deal to him, but he said staying at this level is every bit as important to him. "It means a lot, and it also tells me to keep on swimming and keep improving.

LANCASTER - If Benton Girdler gets where he wants to go, these are not the last records he will set in the pool. For now, they are among the most significant achievements for a Garrard County boy who has risen through the ranks of the state's best young swimmers. Girdler broke two state records in a recent invitational meet, capping a banner year in which he also won a state championship and earned a national ranking in his U.S. Swimming age division. He is aiming much higher than that, however, as he has gone from swimming for fun when he first joined the Danville Aquatic Club to aiming for lofty goals, including a berth on the U.S. Olympic team.
