Saturday's Farmers' Market day was cool, cloudy and breezy. Most of our farmers, growers and vendors were present with a nice variety of spring veggies. Asparagus and rhubarb quickly sold out, followed by the crisp, green lettuces and onions. There was a fantastic variety of baked goods - sourdough breads, dill bread, friendship breads, wheat breads and more. Some booths offered samples of various goodies. Steve Gray set up a unique booth with his hand-crank grinder. He demonstrated how he makes his corn meal mix and sold bags of the finished product.  The Boyle County FFA is back again this year selling plants from its greenhouse.

CRAB ORCHARD - These are not your grandmother's flowers. Among the patchwork rows of plants at the Lincoln County Produce Auction, you won't find pass impatients to nod quietly around the front porch. Double impatients colored by Marilyn Monroe's lipstick demand admiration. Marigolds like gold medallions pop with fragrance. And above it all, the hypnotic hum of the auctioneer leads buyers down the rows in a steady progression. At Friday's auction, located outside Crab Orchard on Ky. 39, prices grew just as healthy as the plants, pleasing bidders and producers alike with the strong start of a fledgling auction spot.

Now that colder weather has arrived, the Boyle County Farmers Market is moving indoors to 326 W. Main St. “We were finding that once the market closes, you still have the stuff, but no place to sell it,” said Joyce Taylor, one of the market managers who also sells items under the name of her farm, Knob View. When the opportunity came to transition indoors, the group grabbed the chance. Sellers say they love what the new location offers them, because they now no longer have to worry about the weather outside.
