Bluegrass Community & Technical College recently awarded scholarships to five Clark County students. Lauren Byarski and Kayla Carrol, both of Winchester received Commonwealth scholarships. Neatha Coyle of Winchester received the Quentin Stacy Memorial Scholarship. Regina Witt of Winchester received the Raymond L. and Mabel Haggard Quisenberry Endowed Scholarship. Misty Lewis of Winchester received the Ralph Oliver Scholarship. Both the Quisenberry and Oliver scholarships are for students enrolled at BCTC, while Commonwealth and Stacy scholarships are for high school students.

Scholarship applications are now available for the 2012-2013 school year at Bluegrass Community & Technical College. While criteria is varied with each scholarship with most based on financial need, some also emphasize strong academic need and/or special interests. To be considered for a scholarship, students must complete all BCTC admission requirements. Complete applications must also include a copy of a student's most recent academic/grade transcript and  one letter of recommendation.

New students attending Bluegrass Community and Technical College's Winchester campus for the fall semester will be paying more for tuition. On Friday, the board of regents of the Kentucky Community and Technical College System (KCTCS) - of which BCTC is a member - approved a 3.7 percent tuition increase for the upcoming year. The move raises the in-state tuition rate for new students from $135 per credit hour to $140 per credit hour. Out-of-state tuition for students from counties contiguous to Kentucky will increase $10, from $270 to $280 per credit hour, and $490 per credit hour for all other out-of-state students.

Bluegrass Community and Technical College is offering three new degree programs for the fall semester. Biotechnology laboratory technician, criminal justice and theatre associate degree programs will be available to students for the first time. BCTC has offered classes with emphasis in the three subjects before, but they were not part of their own associate degree programs. “These new programs will position BCTC to meet student needs even better than we already are,” said David Hellmich, vice president of academics at BCTC.

Phase I of Winchester's newest walking trail, Rolling Hills Trail, was officially opened to the public Thursday. The quarter-mile trail is located on the Winchester campus of Bluegrass Community and Technical College. Eventually it will expand through the Winchester Industrial Park. “Every trail that we add means more access, and it will move the needle in terms of health care in Kentucky,” Gina Lang, chairman of the Clark County Activity Coalition said. When the trail is complete, it will be almost three miles, making it the longest trail in Clark County.

Bluegrass Community and Technical College Winchester Campus has eight scholarships available for non-traditional students for the fall 2011 semester. All applicants for the six $350 and two $500 scholarships must live and be employed in Clark County. The Winchester-Clark County Industrial Development Authority provided two of the scholarships. The Winchester-Clark County Chamber of Commerce, Cedar Creek Engineering, Ernie Sammons, Sr. Memorial, Winchester Federal Bank, the Winchester Kiwanis Club and the Winchester Rotary Club each funded one. Applications are available at the chamber office and BCTC.

LEXINGTON - Bluegrass Community and Technical College students who receive financial aid have new guidelines to meet due to recent changes to the Federal Satisfactory Academic Policy. While there have always been academic guidelines set in order for students to receive federal and state financial aid, the new guidelines will help identify at-risk students earlier than before. “SAP is not new. Students have always been held responsible for academic performance,” Director of Financial Aid Runan Pendergrast said.

A group of Bluegrass Community and Technical College students from Winchester had an opportunity to meet one-on-one with state legislators Thursday in Frankfort. While there, the 16 students also had an opportunity to tour the Capitol and sit in on a meeting of the Senate Education Committee - as well as a session of the Kentucky House of Representatives. While those things were interesting, most of the students said they made the trip just to get a chance to speak to state Sen. R.J. Palmer, D-28, and state Rep. Donna Mayfield, R-73, and to get answers to questions concerning BCTC and their education.

President's List Western Kentucky University: Sarah Durham of Yosemite, daughter of Mary and Randall Durham. She is a psychology major and criminology minor. Scholarships BRENTWOOD, Tenn. - Tractor Supply Co. and the National FFA Foundation recently announced the results of their new Growing Scholars program. Tractor Supply customers across the country donated $362,324, resulting in 284 scholarships awarded to FFA members in their pursuit of a college degree.

In 2012, Boyle County was named a “Work Ready Community” by the Kentucky Workforce Investment Board. The designation was based on the county's high school graduation rates, postsecondary education attainment, digital literacy, community commitment to workforce development, National Career Readiness Certificate implementation and soft/professional skills development programs. According to Cindy Peck, area director for the continuing education and outreach at Eastern Kentucky University, one of the stipulations to maintain the work ready certification is to increase the percentage of people in the community with a bachelor's degree.

With more than 425 guests, Friday's “Run for the Glitz”  has been the most successful to date. Since JoEllen Reed threw the first event seven years ago at the Winchester Opera House, attendance continued to outgrow the venues until Ron Tierney offered his warehouse four years ago to host the event, she said. Guests began arriving at 7 p.m. and were assigned to tables. There was a cash bar and a buffet dinner including marinated pork loin in bourbon sauce, hot brown casserole, roasted potatoes, corn pudding, rolls, asparagus and salad as well as beer cheese as an appetizer and strawberry shortcake for dessert.

The annual “Run for the Glitz” has exceeded the number of attendees from previous years with more than 400 guests reserving tables this year. JoEllen Reed, who founded the Glitz seven years ago, met with the committee April 10 and discussed the event, including sponsors, auction items and entertainment. This year's Glitz will take place in a building donated by Ron Tierney that will hold more than 51 tables. Reed said the event was first held at the Winchester Opera House but outgrew the venue in its first year.

Clarification Burke's Outlet will have a soft-opening noon-6 p.m. Thursday, and will open for regular hours 9 a.m.-9 p.m. on Friday. A grand-opening celebration is planned for Oct. 19. The new store offers name brands in all apparel categories, family footwear and home selections, and is located in the Danville Manor Shopping Center, 1560 Hustonville Road. Information was incomplete about the multiple openings in Tuesday's BizTech section.    BCTC gives report at Fiscal Court meeting  Boyle County Fiscal Court heard a detailed report about Bluegrass Community and Technical College's Danville campus at its meeting Tuesday.  Erin Tipton, director of the campus, said the location now has more than 1,600 students as compared to about 200 when the college started operations in Danville 10 years ago. “Danville now has the biggest BCTC campus outside of Lexington,” Tipton said.

The Amazon corporation cleared its final hurdle Tuesday evening and can now proceed with plans for an 81,000-square-foot facility in the Winchester-Clark County Industrial Park. The Winchester-Clark County Planning Commission unanimously approved the final development plan for a call center on 15.4 acres zoned light industrial. The preliminary development plan was approved at the September meeting, when representatives said the call center could employ as many as 800 people by early 2013.

Andrew M. Forbes gradauted U.S. Navy basic training earlier this month. A West Jessamine High School and BCTC graduate, Forbes completed his training at Great Lakes, Ill. During his eight weeks of training, Forbes learned seamanship, water survival, extensive shipboard damage control, firefighting and anti-terrorism. His company made it into the hall of fame due to team excellence in all areas of training. Forbes graduated as an “honor grad” with the rank of E-3. He is now attending cryptology intelligence school in Pensacola, Fla. His sister, Brittany, a senior at the University of Kentucky; and his parents, Andrew and June Forbes, attended his graduation.

Luke Daniel Riddering, 19, died Sunday, July 29 after a tragic accident. Luke was born in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., on Aug. 6, 1992 to his parents, Harry and Barbara Riddering. He was a student at BCTC in Lexington. In addition to his parents, he is survived by two brothers, Jeff and wife Tammy Riddering, of Missouri, and Michael and wife Amy Riddering, of West Africa; aunts and uncles, Calvin and Jeanne Radius, Betty Lagestee, Richard and Monty Riddering, and Deloris Riddering, as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.
