Life can get tough for a beagle with no home and puppies on the way. Especially when she gets picked up by the canine police and ends up in the doggy slammer. But sometimes a beagle's long, silky brown ears and luminous, pleading eyes can turn things around. Which is exactly what happened with Copper. Dan Turcea, director of the Danville-Boyle County Humane Society, couldn't stand to see the young, affectionate dog suffer through pregnancy and delivery amid the yelping and yapping in a kennel filled with puppies and dogs.

JUNCTION CITY - Boyle County Fire Department responded to a garage that was engulfed in flames Thursday night after a wood-burning stove left unattended. The department's information officer said a Beagle dog and her seven puppies died in the blaze. Chris Coffman said the call came in at 9:49 p.m. about a garage next to a home at 150 Ben Jean Drive, just past the Danville-Boyle County Airport, near the Lincoln County line. The homeowners, only known as the Browns, and a neighbor both called.

This beagle/hound mix, Butterscotch, is among the animals available for adoption this week at the Danville-Boyle County Humane Society Animal Shelter. Also available are several beautiful black Labrador retriever mix pups, rat terrier mix pups, beagle mix pups, an adult Doberman, and a variety of cats and kittens. The shelter is open from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. The adoption fee of $60 includes spay/neuter surgery, first vaccinations, de-worming, rabies vaccination and, for cats, feline-leukemia test.

Chloe, a young adult Lab-spaniel mix, is among the animals available for adoption from the Danville-Boyle County Humane Society. Chloe is very sweet-natured and is being obedience trained. She is in foster care, so anyone interested in her should call the shelter at (859) 238-1117. Other adults include a small terrier mix, a small beagle mix, an Australian shepherd and a year-old beagle. Pups available include Lab mix, beagle mix, red heeler mix and many other beautiful mixes. There also are many kittens of all sizes, colors and hair lengths available.

Mona Brandenburg Beagle, 69, of Winchester, passed away on Monday, May 16, 2011, at Richmond Health and Rehabilitation, Madison. She was the widow of Ralph Beagle. Mona was born on Dec. 28, 1941, in Estill County and was the daughter of Dorcie Leslie and Ida Lewis Tribble Brandenburg, both of whom preceded her in death. She retired from Square D as an administrative assistant after 39 years of service. Mona attended Christview Christian Church in Winchester. Survivors include one brother, David L. Brandenburg and his wife, Betty, of Richmond; one sister, Martha Baxter and her husband, George, of Richmond; four nephews, Jim D. Crutcher and his wife Stella, Dan C. Crutcher and his wife Daphne, Todd Brandenburg, Alan Brandenburg and his fiancee Kindra Hinz; two great-nephews, Caleb and Kyle Crutcher; and two great-nieces, Crissi and Calah Crutcher.

Mallory is a very sweet Beagle/ Shepherd mix that will be your companion for many years to come. She is the perfect size to run and play with but also to cuddle with on the couch. Although small in stature, she can be quite fiesty. Mallory loves attention and to lay in your lap and be spoiled. Have you longed for a Porsche? This little Porsche cat is for you. Porsche is only 12 weeks old with a special package of extras included. Our little Porsche is spayed, and has had her shots.

Dandy, a young adult Lhasa Apso mix, and Jewell Annie, a 9-year-old spayed calico cat, are among the animals available for adoption this week from the Danville-Boyle County Humane Society. Other cats available include Sweet Tart, Sam and Pinky, all tortoiseshells, Kenny G., a laid-back tabby, and several others. Puppies include beagle-Australian shepherd mix, Manchester terrier mix, husky mix, Lab mix and beagle mix. Blue, a 7-month-old neutered male beagle mix, is still available.

Sam, a beautiful tortoisehell 6-month-old kitten, and Julep, a bashful and very sweet beagle mix pup, are among the animals available for adoption this week from the Danville-Boyle County Humane Society. There are several cats available for adoption, including another tortoiseshell, a few black and white short-haired adults, a Scottish fold mix and a short-haired calico. Among the many dogs and puppies available are several terrier-border collie puppies; a neutered 6-month-old beagle mix named Brewster; a spayed and housetrained 1-year-old feisty mix named Jetta; a beagle-cocker spaniel mix pup named Rascal, and two Lab mixes.
