Danville City Commission weighed in Monday night on how remaining space in one of the city's final resting places will be sold and reaffirmed intentions to better enforce protocol at both of the city cemeteries. The commission approved a plan presented by Assistant City Engineer Josh Morgan that will divide portions of space remaining at Bellevue Cemetery on North First Street into three sections, designated as Sections V, W and X. In all, the new sections will include 528 graves, which Morgan said likely will last five to 10 years based on the current pace of about 100 burials and 50 lots sold per year.

Two weekends ago a family group from Missouri came to Danville to do some family research and visit the graves of their ancestors. They only had Saturday to do their research and visit the graves. I took them to Bellevue Cemetery but had no idea where the graves were located. When we got to the cemetery, a very nice young man named Jason Turner went out of his way to help us find what we were seeking and was very helpful and nice to us all. I want to thank him on behalf of the family and the local genealogy group for treating us so politely and being so helpful.

She, so to speak, scratched the surface.   For those of us concerned with the preservation of our heritage, including members of the Boyle County Genealogical Society, local and nearby members of Sons of the American Revolution and Daughters of the American Revolution - and descendants of Samuel and Mary McClung McDowell. The Sons and Daughters of the American Revolution recognize Bellevue as the final resting place of nine known participants in this country's struggle for independence from 1775-1783 (and beyond, of course)

Bellevue Cemetery is the final resting place of many Kentuckians, ranging from governors and Civil War generals to unidentified soldiers in the National Cemetery section. A paved road weaves between towering stone monuments and modest markers, over sloping green hills and under stately trees, next to the graves of familiar names - Boyle, Owsley, Bell and Fry, among others. However, stepping off the path and into the rows of tombstones can lead to some fascinating discoveries. One headstone, inconspicuous among the ornate memorials around it, features an anchor and some faded letters, which at first glance wouldn't catch the eye of most passersby.
