Dear Editor: I find it interesting that Ben Chandler is against so many of the things that our president is doing to improve our lives. I will not discuss the obvious national security measures that he doesn't think are necessary. I am more concerned about his inability to work with others and in particular that he has come out against president Bush's tax cuts. Once again we have a career politician who thinks he knows how to spend my money better than I do. I believe the government exists to do for its citizens what they cannot do for themselves.

Dear Editor: Every four years Kentucky conducts an election to determine who will be its next governor. It never fails that every four years misguided opponents accuse the Republican candidate of planning to destroy the merit system for state employees. Please consider the following facts about this election: Fact No. 1 - The Kentucky merit system for state employees is statutory. It was adopted by the Kentucky legislature and can only be abolished by the Kentucky legislature.

As a proud Kentuckian and registered voter, I strive to remain informed and consider myself current on the “partisan theater” that our stalled government has eroded into on the national stage. I am writing to voice my disappointment in our U.S. representative, Ben Chandler's, Thursday vote, in an unwarranted precedent, to find AG Eric Holder in criminal contempt of congress. I question what this vote accomplished after following the media's coverage of the congressional committee investigation/proceedings.

Similar to many of the local elections, incumbents at the state and federal level who represent Lincoln County will face opposition this year. There are a few elected officials, however, who won't need to mount much of a campaign. Those who will be running unopposed include State Representative Danny Ford (R); District Court Judges Janet Booth and Bill Oliver; Circuit Court Judges David Tapp and Jeff Burdette; and Commonwealth Attorney Eddy Montgomery (R). Non-local races for which Lincoln Countians will be casting their vote include the following: U.S. Rep. 6th Congressional District Ben Chandler, Democrat Elaine Carlson, Republican 34th Senatorial District Ed Worley, Democrat Albert Spencer, Republican Barry Metcalf, Republican 80th Representative District Danny Ford, Republican 28th Judicial Circuit, (Commonwealth Attorney)

We're confused about this "fat cat" stuff. Ben Chandler, the Democratic candidate for governor, accused President Bush of stroking the "fat cats" during his visit to Kentucky Thursday. Chandler was making reference to a fund-raiser in Lexington that brought in $1.25 million for the campaign of Ernie Fletcher, the Republican candidate for governor. According to the Associated Press, about 1,700 people paid $500 or $1,000 each to attend the fund-raiser, which featured a speech by President Bush.

Republican challenger for the U.S. 6th congressional district Andy Barr said he has one message for the voters of Jessamine County. “If the people of Jessamine County think that Washington is broken - if you don't like what's going on in Washington and you want to send Washington a message, then you've got to replace your congressman,” he said. Barr, a Lexington attorney and part-time instructor at Morehead State University, is challenging U.S....

A new political star was born during Tuesday's elections in central Kentucky. His name is Heath Lovell. Heath Lovell wasn't on any ballot but he played a big role in Republican Andy Barr's defeat of Democratic 6th District U.S. Rep. Ben Chandler. Heath Lovell is Kentucky's version of Joe the Plumber, but Heath provided a lot more help to Barr, who won his race, than Joe was able to give 2008 Republican presidential candidate U.S. Sen. John McCain, who lost his. You know Heath.

Republican challenger for the Sixth District Congressional seat Andy Barr faced state auditor Adam Edelen, standing in for incumbent Ben Chandler. Candidates fielded questions submitted by the audience on state and national issues, including the economy, health care and the coal industry. “Our country faces enormous challenges right now - unemployment, national debt. The answer … is to return power back to the American people,” Barr said in his opening statement. It was a sentiment echoed by Edelen, speaking on behalf of Chandler.

David Sparrow, former longtime agricultural extension agent for Boyle County, now wants to plow political fields. He is running as a Democrat for the 54th District state House seat now occupied by Mike Harmon, a first-term Republican from Junction City. Boyle and Washington counties comprise the 54th District. Because Sparrow and Harmon are the only candidates who have filed for the 54th District seat, there will be no primary in that race. They will square off in the November general election.

Dear Editor: Regarding abortion, Ben Chandler has said, "I think it, very simply best left to a woman to make that decision. " This sounds an awful lot like the infamous "personally opposed to abortion, but cannot impose this belief on others" that we hear so often from politicians as well as other "pro-choice" individuals. It is truly sickening how many people are willing to embrace this cowardly philosophy. French existentialist and nobel prize-winning author Albert Camus wrote, "We shall know nothing until we know we have the right to kill our fellow men, or the right to let them be killed.
