One night after being named Danville's homecoming queen, Kaitlin Snapp placed first Saturday at the Berea Invitational. But she ran a little farther than the other runners, veering off course to fall behind Lincoln County's Alex Bunch before overtaking her after the 2-mile mark and winning in a time of 19 minutes, 49.3 seconds on the 3.1-mile course at Berea College. “In true Kaitlin fashion, she became mentally tough and overcame that mental error and caught Alex and ended up winning,” Danville coach Chris Verhoven said.

It was one for the record books last year as Lincoln County's soccer Patriots  made their first appearance in the 15th Region Tournament to cap off a 15-5-2 season, a season which included an 11-game win streak and six games in which the soccer Patriots scored at least seven goals. While it's still months away from the 2011 regionals, it appears the soccer Patriots are ready to get back to their winning ways, as they held off visiting Berea 4-3 in Tuesday's season opener. “Last year we learned how to win and we're still on our incline up,” said Lincoln coach Wendy Peters.

BEREA — Union Church, Berea College’s historic, nondenominational church that was founded by 19th century abolitionist John G. Fee, was the setting Thursday night for the launch of a contemporary civil rights campaign. Faith leaders, students, business owners, teachers, artists and Berea residents joined on the steps of Union Church Thursday morning to announce the launch of Bereans for Fairness, a local campaign to win passage of a city gay and transgender anti-discrimination fairness law. Similar to legislation that has passed in Covington, Lexington and Louisville in Kentucky, a Berean fairness law would prohibit discrimination in employment, housing and public accommodations based on someone’s perceived sexual orientation or gender identity.

Lincoln County High School boys golfer Chris Risner will be continuing his links career. Risner, who joined the LCHS team while still in elementary school, was an avid player throughout his long stint on the Patriot golf team with his sights set on eventually making the leap to the collegiate level. “I’ve been playing golf ever since I was young, in fifth grade,” said Risner. “My Uncle Jim (Atkins) taught me everything I know and Robert Foster. I’ve always liked it. And I’ve always wanted to play college golf and turn pro one day.” The 2011 LCHS graduate, who became one of the Patriots’ leaders as his game progressed, is not quite ready to hit the pro circuit, but he realized his dream of playing college golf when he signed with Berea College.
