The numbers don't lie. The latest figures released by the NCAA has Kentucky ranked in the Top 20 in five defensive categories, including third in pass efficiency and scoring defense. The Cats also are ranked No. 2 in total defense in the Southeastern Conference behind South Carolina. The lofty numbers are eye-catching, but Kentucky defensive back Ashton Cobb doesn't get caught up in the statistics. "That doesn't mean anything," he said. "Each game is a one-game season.

Wilmore native Steven Brooks' journey to success took some detours, yet through its rough patches, his efforts culminated with a career first on April 30. A one-time basketball player at West Jessamine High School, Brooks had only dabbled in playing on the grasses of a golf course. His change to a new hobby, however, took a turn when he won the Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournament on that late April day, claiming the conference player-of-the-year award along the way with his play throughout the season.

LEXINGTON - Even before Middle Tennessee stunned visiting Maryland 24-14 on Saturday, Kentucky coach Rich Brooks knew the Blue Raiders had a good football program. "It (the win over Maryland) is clearly an alarm, not that we weren't going to be concerned to start with. I watched them run through Louisville last year and almost beat Louisville at Louisville," said Brooks Sunday. "It wasn't a fluke they beat Maryland. In my mind, this will be our biggest test of the season in all phases.

LEXINGTON - Robbie McAtee was at the right place at the right time. McAtee "was hanging around the goal line" when Middle Tennessee nearly pulled off a Hail-Mary upset shocker similar to the one LSU pulled on the Wildcats six years ago in a win over the Wildcats at Commonwealth Stadium. Only this time, the home team prevailed. No heads dropped leaving the stadium. As time expired, Middle Tennessee receiver Eldred King snagged a pass tipped by teammate Malcolm Beyah inches away from the goal line.

Chris Butler thought he had played his final game of golf back on Sept. 28, 2011, when he finished his round in the Boys Region 4 Golf Tournament at Danville Country Club. “I had decided at the beginning of this year that I didn't think I wanted to play anymore,” Butler said. “I was done with it. I didn't want to do it. I just wanted to go to college and get an education.” But then ... “Then, of course, the weather started to get nice again around March and April, and I wanted to play again.

Ventrell Jenkins didn't realize how close Kentucky came to losing to Middle Tennessee nearly two weeks ago. A tongue lashing from coach Rich Brooks following the narrow victory wasn't enough to convince Jenkins and the rest of the cast just how close one yard could have easily been a one-point loss. However, one glance at the video proved to Jenkins, a defensive end, and the rest of the Wildcats, how poorly they played against the Blue Raiders. If you ask Jenkins, it wasn't pretty.
