Dear Editor: For six years (1990-1996), I traveled and worked with the Rebel band as an active booster. During that period the band was a state powerhouse, and national contender. At one contest in Whitley County, spectators referred to them as "The University of Boyle County" because of their power, size and sound. Also during that time, the band boosters held six marching band competitions with great success. Only one time was there a problem with using the football field, and that was due to uncertain turf conditions due to heavy rain.

Dear Editor: And the winner is ... the coaches and athletic boosters. Yes folks, by losing Dr. Pam Rogers, Boyle County academics will take a back seat now to the special interest groups representing athletics. What is most disheartening is all of the progress that has been made in improving test scores will be pushed aside for more important school functions like sports and buying equipment. Hooray! The days of qualified teachers and a long-term vision that the staff has bought into, and more importantly supports, is gone!

Dear Editor: The recent vote by the Danville High School Band Boosters to host the KYPAA Cherry Regional Band Contest would not have been possible without the support of the school administration and the athletics department. The contest will bring renewed recognition to the DHS band program, a program that is very much on the rebound thanks to director Jeff Towns. Even though most of the focus appears to be on the high school band, the money that will be raised from hosting the KYPAA contest also supports the middle school program.

Motorists will now have to make sure that they are in compliance with Kentucky's new child booster seat law that went into effect July 15. Parents in Kentucky will be required to take new measures to protect their children in the car. The new law requires that children under seven years of age and 40 and 50 inches tall will have to ride in a booster seat. The new requirements are part of KRS 189.125, which sets forth guidelines for child safety seats, booster seats and seat belts.
