Interim City Manager John W.D. Bowling stepped down from the position Tuesday, saying he feared for his safety after a threat was made on his life, but an attorney who said he represents the man accused of making the threat claims his client is innocent. A stunned audience at city hall listened as Mayor Bernie Hunstad read Bowling's letter of resignation following an executive session for personnel matters that lasted less than an hour. In the letter, Bowling said he had concerns for his safety “resulting from a specific threat against my life, that prevents me from being able to serve further as interim city manager.” Bowling, who won three terms as Danville mayor and also served in the state legislature, was hired as interim city manager June 1. Hunstad declined to comment on the nature of the threat, only saying he became aware of it late last week and noting that people who make such threats can be charged with a felony.

In between greeting dozens of well-wishers Friday, outgoing Danville Mayor John W.D. Bowling got a little Greek going. "This is the Omega. The Alpha was back in 1982," Bowling said before offering the translation. "The beginning and the end. " The send-off reception was at the Community Arts Center, one of many jewels in Danville's crown that was added during Bowling's long tenure as king, er mayor, of the city. Bowling gladly recalled his role in turning the former federal building into a home for Danville's arts scene.

Fitch is capable of bowling both left and right-handed. He was the first person in the city and among the first in the nation to have rolled a 300 game and 800 series with each hand. He has four 800 series and 15 300 games using his left hand and four 800 series and three 300 games using his right hand. He holds a 220 average in a league in Danville and 215 in leagues in Lexington and Nicholasville.

Danville Mayor John W.D. Bowling "might" want to pay up now for the shutters on the city's new fire station. After all, he said he "might" do that at a city commission meeting in July 2004 when the commission approved a $629,280 fire station design. Bowling's payment "might" be even more appropriate today since the station didn't cost $630,000 but $836,901, nearly twice what it was originally budgeted to cost. The station was Bowling's baby from the beginning. Looking back at discussions by the city commission over the past couple of years, it's clear that Bowling dragged the commission kicking and screaming into selecting the current site and constructing the brick building that looks more like a house than a fire station.

Rather than feel miffed over not getting an immediate scholarship offer from Kentucky, Bowling Green receiver Nacarius Fant is more than willing to come to UK's camp on June 8 and show what he can do. Kentucky offensive coordinator Neal Brown recently watched Fant practice and told him he liked his “footwork” and other things. “He wants me to come to camp June 8 and compete against SEC type cornerbacks in the 2014 (recruiting) class,” said Fant. “Once he sees that - and he has to make sure I am the type receiver he's looking for - and I prove I can play one on one versus elite players, then the offer will come.

A bowling alley can be a noisy place on a league night, but Joe Byrd couldn't help but notice how quiet it was. Byrd was having the night of his life, and just about everyone else in Danville Bowlarama had taken notice. So every time he stepped up for his approach, bowlers on adjacent lanes were putting their conversations on hold and waiting to take their turns. They wanted to watch as Byrd constructed the best series ever bowled at the local lanes, and they certainly didn't want to be a distraction for someone who was in the kind of zone he found himself in on that February night.
