As Clint Hellyer took the baton for the final leg of the 1,600-meter relay, he had one goal in mind: Get second place. The Boyle County senior outran a West Jessamine runner who was right with him, then passed a Russell County runner to get that second for his team and edge Mercer County 19-116 in the Class AA, Region 5 championships on a drizzly, windy day at Boyle. “It was close. I passed a kid (from Russell) on the first curve and just ran away from them,” said Hellyer, who was part of two runner-up relay teams.

Our highlighted pets this week are Sebastian and Jed. Sebastian is a handsome black and white adult cat. His favorite activities are lounging around and eating. You will notice when you meet Sebastian that he is a bit on the chunky side, which just means there's more kitty to love. Sebastian was brought to the humane society when his owner could no longer care for her pets. This sweet boy deserves a second chance at his forever home. Jed is a cute, 5-month-old hound mix puppy. If you prefer short legs and big ears, Jed is the boy for you. Jed loves his playtime, and his specialty is a good game of fetch.

Connor Blevins is trying to help lead the Boyle County baseball team in any way he can. The Boyle senior has moved into the third spot in the batting order and has given his team a strong defensive presence in right field. “I've been waiting on the ball longer, driving to the opposite field with power. Just trying to do my part and get some leadership on the field,” Blevins said. “I take a lot of pride in (defense) and definitely work out in the offseason and have gotten a lot stronger.” Boyle coach Kyle Wynn said Blevins has been a leader and productive player for the Rebels (13-10)

Tractor Supply has been working with the National 4-H Council during the last three years to generate funds to benefit 4-H programs locally, statewide and nationally. Elysse Petrie has the pitcher's circle at Rebel Stadium all to herself for a while, but she is certainly not alone. Petrie is one half of a two-person pitching tandem that has been so successful for Boyle County this season, and right now she's the only one throwing. She has been the full-time starter for the Rebels for the last couple of weeks while fellow senior Hannah Miniard has rested a sore elbow. And while she said she feels she has handled the additional workload well, she is also quick to say she has had plenty of help.

LEXINGTON - Liz Marcinek knows the competition she'll see at next week's Class A regional meet will be nothing like what she saw at Friday's Central Kentucky Conference meet at Henry Clay. She also ran her best time in the 200 (27.97) to place fourth and took fourth in the 100. “Going against these girls, especially in the 200 and 100, being behind these fast sprinters makes me go faster.
