Hundreds of Clark County teens are familiar with Chad Varga and his anti-drug message. Now their parents and other community members want to say thank you to Varga for his investment in local youth. There will be a reception in his honor Thursday at the Winchester Opera House from 7 to 9 p.m. The event is free and desserts will be served. Varga will speak about his new book, “Bounce: Down is Inevitable, but Up is a Choice.” “He'll be telling all about the work he's doing across the nation,” Karen Smith Haskins, executive director of Varga's non-profit organization InspireNow Inc., said.

Farmers Deposit Bank of Middleburg is in the process of being bought by Citizens Bank & Trust Co., based in Jackson. Monticello Banking has announced it will build a branch in Liberty on Wallace Wilkinson Boulevard. Citizens Bank expects a final decision on its Federal Reserve application to acquire the Middleburg bank in three weeks. Burt Bellamy, president and CEO of Citizens Bank said, if the acquisition is approved, Farmers Deposit Bank will keep its name and locations in Liberty and Middleburg.

Tommy Lloyd Gillum, 76, of Winchester, husband of Doris J. Gillum, passed away July 4 at the Clark Regional Medical Center.   A native of Jackson, he was born May 3, 1935, to the late Thomas P. and Julia A. Gillum.   He graduated from Breathitt County High School in Jackson in 1954.   He married Doris J. Turner on April 14, 1961 in Winchester. He was a United States Army veteran during the Vietnam era. He retired from Rockwell International in 1987, he was a Kentucky Colonel, he was a home builder in central Kentucky, and a member of the Clark County Fish and Game Club.

Heather Nicole Cummings, 20, of Winchester, died Tuesday morning, Oct. 18, at her residence after a 2 1/2 year diligent bout with cancer.   She was born May 7, 1991 in Lexington to Alex and Sheri Cummings. Heather was a Clark County native. She graduated in 2009 from Oakdale Christian Academy in Breathitt County, and was a member of the FFA, a believer in Christ and loved to travel.   Heather loved and adored her parents, brothers, grandparents, family, friends and her pets. Survivors include her parents, Alex and Sheri Cummings of Winchester; two brothers, Alex Cummings of Winchester and Chris Brown (Megan)
