Jake Combs pitched a five-inning shutout as Lincoln County defeated Burgin 10-0 Monday at Stanford. Combs allowed only five hits and one walk, and the Lincoln offense provided plenty of support after being shut out in its previous two games. “Jake Combs had a great pitching performance, and we strung together some hits to put some runs on the board,” Lincoln coach Brad McNew said. “It was good see us put the bat on the ball after being shut out twice this weekend.” Jared Robbins went 2-for-3 for Burgin (1-5)

Burgin, playing its third season of full varsity soccer, was no match for Lincoln as the soccer Patriots controlled the ball from the opening kickoff and outshot the Bulldogs 49-12. “Eighteen goals in three days. That’s good for us,” said Lincoln coach Wendy Peters.

LOUISVILLE - Liz Marcinek never pictured herself as a pioneer. For that matter, Marcinek said she never imagined when she took up track and field just over a year ago that she could even compete at the state level, much less contend for a state title. But she made history for her school Saturday when she gave Burgin what is probably its first track and field championship by winning the Class A girls long jump title at the state meet at Owsley Frazier Cardinal Park. There are no records at the school or anywhere else that indicate that any Burgin athlete had ever won a state title before Saturday - it appears no one from the school had even scored a point at the state meet before 2008 - and Marcinek if she is the first champion, she's happy to shine the spotlight on her small school.

LOUISVILLE - Two things were working against Nick Beckerson on Saturday at the state track and field championships, but he didn't get too upset about it. Beckerson was seeded first in the Class A boys discus Saturday, but he got neither the mark or the place he was looking for. Instead, he finished third with a throw of 150 feet, 4 inches that was about 2 feet less than his best. The two boys who finished ahead of him got off impressive throws before Beckerson stepped into the ring for his final attempt, and a scratch on that attempt denied him the chance to match them.

The power of persuasion worked wonders on Taylor Sanders, and she couldn't be happier that it did. In her three years in track and field, Sanders has gone from novice to regional champion to future college athlete - all because a teammate talked her into giving the sport a try. BURGIN - It's been quite the turnaround year for the Garrard County softball team. A year ago, the Golden Lions were in the midst of a two-win season with a team full of freshmen and eighth-graders. But after their 18-0 win Tuesday over Burgin, the Lions are one of the hottest teams in the 12th Region, having won five straight nine of their last 10 to sit at 23-12. “They've just got a lot more confidence and they're grown up as ball players. They're doing a million times better than I thought they would, and we're just becoming a better team,” said Garrard's only senior, outfielder Sydney Pozzuto, who drove in two runs Tuesday.

The way Chris Beckerson saw it, the Burgin boys had one shot. With four of the 10 athletes on the team only days away from graduation, the Burgin coach didn't figure his team would be in position to contend for a regional track and field title a year from now. So he and the Bulldogs went all in Saturday, working out the math before the meet and stockpiling points during the meet to win their first regional championship. Burgin won only three of the 18 boys events but scored in 16 events to finish far out in front in the Class A, Region 5 championships at Admiral Stadium.

LEXINGTON - Liz Marcinek knows the competition she'll see at next week's Class A regional meet will be nothing like what she saw at Friday's Central Kentucky Conference meet at Henry Clay. And that competition made for a good night for the Burgin junior. She set personal records while placing second in the triple jump (32-11 1/2) and long jump (16-1). She also ran her best time in the 200 (27.97) to place fourth and took fourth in the 100. “Going against these girls, especially in the 200 and 100, being behind these fast sprinters makes me go faster.
