After a tough loss earlier in the week, Burgin (9-6) bounced back and posted a 25-13, 25-11, 25-8 win at Danville (2-11) on Thursday. “Consistent serving and passing were established as our goals of the match and were seen throughout both the JV and varsity contests,” Burgin coach Maggie McKnight said. “We are excited about our rematches next week against Casey County and West Jessamine. We are hoping to come out on top of both these Region 12 teams.” Burgin improved to 9-6; Danville fell to 2-11.

WKYT-TV in Lexington is reporting that a man is dead and a woman seriously wounded after a shooting Tuesday night on Ashley Camp Road near Burgin in Mercer County. The station reports the shooting happened around 8 p.m., and that the Mercer County coroner has confirmed a man was found dead in the home and that a woman was taken to UK Hospital in Lexington with a gunshot wound. Burgin went 3-0 and claimed the 12th Region All “A” Classic title for the second straight season Saturday at Danville. The Bulldogs (8-5) opened with a 25-11, 25-11 win over Danville, then beat Somerset 25-17, 25-12 and finally downed Monticello 25-15, 25-10. Danville got its first win of the season with a 25-17, 25-17 win over Monticello. The Admirals (1-10) also fell to Somerset 25-16, 25-12. Somerset posted a 25-23, 25-18 win over Monticello to go 2-1 and finish second in the round-robin tournament.

For the sixth year in a row, the West Jessamine girls' basketball squad was bounced in the first round of the 46th District tournament. The Lady Colts (5-23) were defeated by Burgin 53-39 on Monday night. Burgin (13-17) used a key 16-2 run to close out the second quarter and retake control of the game after falling behind early. Down 16-8 at the 6:05 mark of the second quarter, Burgin burned a timeout to keep the game from getting out of hand as West had just scored on its last two possessions and was building momentum.

Burgin improved to 10-6 on the season Tuesday after pulling out a 21-25, 25-19, 25-22, 17-25, 15-12 win over visiting Casey County. “I could not be more proud of how this team performed tonight. Faced with a strong Casey County team, these girls pulled together and worked hard to earn every point. They battled to win every volley,” Burgin coach Maggie McKnight said. “Emilee Hurt stood out tonight playing middle. Her consistent blocking took a lot of pressure off our defense. Burgin rallied from a nine-point deficit in the third quarter and pulled out a 54-48 win at Sayre on Tuesday. Alex Beckerson scored 19 points with seven rebounds and two assists, Sam Irvine had 11 points and five boards, Austin Shewmaker scored 13 points with three steals, Jared Robbins had seven assists and Travis McEachern added six points, six boards and three assists for the Bulldogs (14-4). Burgin trailed 26-21 at the half and Sayre (3-12) led 30-21 before the Bulldogs started their rally.

HARRODSBURG¿ - The Casey County boys aren't going to capture any beauty contests for how they win. But the victories count just the same. “We don't ever win pretty. We're the ugly stepsister when it comes to winning games,” Casey coach Darry Burkett said after the Rebels beat Burgin 43-34 Friday in the Farmers National Bank 12th Region Madness at Mercer County. “We do guard the living heck out of you, I can't ask my kids to give any more effort on defense. The Burgin girls snapped a two-game losing streak Tuesday and beat visiting Campbellsville 46-34. Liz Marcinek had 18 points and Randi Burke scored 10 for the Bulldogs (9-8), who led 28-22 at the half and 32-29 after three quarters before pulling away late. Trinity Christian 38, Danville Christian Academy 19 - At Lexington, the Warriors (8-8) were outscored 14-1 in the third quarter in a loss at Trinity Christian. Kristen Asmus led DCA¿with nine points and Katherine Raines had seven rebounds.
