The East Jessamine girls' basketball team was able to bounce back from an loss in its season opener to edge Campbellsville 53-46 on Friday night. The Lady Jaguars (1-2) were led by senior Madison Collins and her 19 points, but Heather Welch gave East a huge boost with 11 points in her first start of the season. “Heather really steped up,” East coach Jacqueline Coleman said. “She got that start because of how hard she works in practice.” Collins paced East early,  scoring the team's first seven points, and added six more in the second quarter to help give East a 25-19 lead at halftime.

Boyle County has a new way to dispose of wood waste from both industries and individuals that should save the county money while helping power a Campbellsville company. Boyle Fiscal Court approved an agreement Tuesday with Cox Interiors Inc., a business that mills interior doors and windows, under which the company will chip and haul untreated wood to be used as fuel. Cox Interiors environmental director Ruth Logsdon said the company has a five megawatt power plant built in 1993 that uses a process called biomass cogeneration to produce all of the energy needed for the business.

Lincoln County broke open a close game with six runs in the top of the fifth inning Thursday and went on for a 15-7 win at Campbellsville. Morgan Cooper went 2 for 6 with a double and scored three times while Chelsea Marcum tripled, had three RBIs and scored three times. Maggie Taylor doubled and scored three runs and Gabby Gabriel scored three runs for Lincoln (17-14). Kellie Conley added a double and RBI, Lindsey Gifford had a hit and drove in a run and Kristen Meece was 2 for 4. The Burgin girls snapped a two-game losing streak Tuesday and beat visiting Campbellsville 46-34. Liz Marcinek had 18 points and Randi Burke scored 10 for the Bulldogs (9-8), who led 28-22 at the half and 32-29 after three quarters before pulling away late. Trinity Christian 38, Danville Christian Academy 19 - At Lexington, the Warriors (8-8) were outscored 14-1 in the third quarter in a loss at Trinity Christian. Kristen Asmus led DCA¿with nine points and Katherine Raines had seven rebounds.

Boyle County senior Eric Sheaks wasn't sure he wanted to continue playing soccer in college. But Campbellsville made him a nice offer, and he signed with the school earlier this month. "Basically, I liked the environment, and that it's a private school and also the academics they offer there," said Sheaks, who is getting combination of academic and athletic scholarships. "The coach (Preston Adams) asked if I wanted to come and try out for the soccer team. I did, and they seemed to like what I offered.

Family pressure wasn’t the driving force behind Tyler Priest’s decision to play college football at Union, but it certainly could have been. “What drew me in is it feels like home down there. I’m from down there, my mom and dad and uncle all went there. My grandfather was the dean of education, and my grandmother worked in the admissions office,” the Boyle County senior said. “But my family never made it a priority for me to go to Union, they let me go my own way.” But still, Priest said Union gave him the best offer and he loved the Barbourville school.

LIBERTY - A Campbellsville man has been charged with fourth-degree assault and terroristic threatening, according to records in the circuit clerk's office. Lewis M. Cox, 61, was arrested Friday on warrants in Campbellsville. He is accused of assaulting Maxine Hale and causing injuries to her arm. Cox's bond is $500 cash and he was instructed to have no contact with Hale. Officer Shannon Wilson made the arrest.

Girls from Danville swept the Tiny Miss pageant Wednesday night at the Boyle County Fair. Brookelynn Howell, first, Kylece Benedict, second, and Lila Tipton, third, all of Danville, were crowned the winners. The best dressed girl in the competition was Madison Wall from Yosemite, and Tiny Mister was awarded to Ezra Colton Alexander Curtsinger of Campbellsville. The Tiny Miss and Mister competition is for 3- and 4-year-olds. The Little Miss and Mister pageant also was held Wednesday night.

Three Jessamine County educators received Excellence in Teaching awards from Campbellsville University on Saturday at the school's campus. The awardees were the three recipients of Jessamine County Schools' Excellence in Education awards, Shawn Carlstedt of Rosenwald-Dunbar Elementary School, Anna Campbell of West Jessamine Middle School, and Tasha Bowlin of East Jessamine High School. Carlstedt is a first- and second-grade teacher at Rosenwald-Dunbar Elementary School. She has also taught at Warner Elementary School.

Dorothy Mae Fletcher, 79, of 207 Lindsey Court, died peacefully at her residence Thursday morning. She was born in Paris, Ky., to the late Albert and Lucy Wilson Fletcher. She worked as a nursing assistant at Clark County Hospital for many years. She was a member of First Baptist Church where she served in the Missionary society. She is survived by five children, Ramona, Anna E. Mason and Norma Fletcher, all of Winchester, Martha McCaffery of Los Angeles, Calif., and William Christopher (Debbie)

Anderson Thomas Peyton, newborn baby boy of Josh Peyton and Amber Rayens, passed away Sunday, April 7, at Taylor Regional Hospital in Campbellsville.  Memorial services were April 12 at Fox Funeral Home in Stanford with Rev. Gale Wineinger officiating.  Honoring the parents' wishes, cremation rites were honored.

The Mercer County girls improved to 3-2 with an 8-1 victory over Garrard County on Monday at Lancaster. Erin Pigman won a super tiebreaker at No. 1 singles for Mercer, while Christy Ingram and Kyleigh Murray won in straight sets at No. 1 doubles. Casey County 4, Taylor County 1 - At Campbellsville, Tylyn Leigh and Haley Owens scored singles wins for Casey in its win over Taylor. Boys Casey County 7, Taylor County 2 - At Campbellsville, Casey won five of six singles matches and two of three doubles matches against Taylor.

Campbellsville University wasn't very high on Samantha Sandidge's list of college choices - at least not until she saw it. A visit to Campbellsville changed her mind and led the Danville senior to decide she wanted to play soccer there. She made that decision official by signing with the school Friday. “It wasn't one of my top choices, but I went and visited, and I really liked it. It changed my outlook on it,” Sandidge said. She said she liked everything from the location - she has relatives there - to the school housing to the soccer program.

The coaching and guidance of former East Jessamine soccer head coach DeAngelo Wiser again yielded Campbellsville University a newly signed pair of Lady Jaguars. Minutes after school let out following an untimely fire alarm, seniors Devon Burnside and Carlie Harrison put their name on the dotted line of paperwork to play their collegiate soccer for head coach Thomas Jones and the Campbellsville Tigers. “Their coach spent a lot of time watching their club team, so it was sort of a natural fit,” Wiser said.
