Charles Crandall was coming home from work in Lexington early Tuesday morning. He was thinking about how he needed to get his trash out on time, and he decided to take a shortcut from East Lexington Avenue to his home in Candlewood subdivision. If he hadn't, there might have been a tragedy at the Clymer residence on Chestnut Street. Crandall, who is deaf, had his window rolled down, and as he drove down Parkview Drive he smelled smoke. By the time he got to Caldwell Street the smell had gotten stronger.
