George Rogers Clark boys basketball coach Scott Humphrey didn't know what to expect from his team in the Cardinals' season opener Tuesday night. However, Humphrey had to feel more at ease after the Cardinals survived with a 54-49 triumph at Covington Catholic. “I don't know if you saw two state final teams, but I think (you saw) two teams get better with the environment that we played in, and I was real pleased with our kids' execution down the stretch,” Humphrey said. “We had zero experience going into the environment that we had and it was a great night for us. We really improved a lot since our last scrimmage.” The Cardinals broke open a close encounter by scoring eight straight to open the fourth quarter and made five free throws in the final 1:40 to hold off the Colonels and win the season opener for both teams.

The George Rogers Clark High School football team isn't dwelling on the first month of the season. The Cardinals are moving forward. “That's the good thing about it,” Clark coach Steven Collins said earlier this week. “You get to move on to the next one.” The Cardinals are still searching for their first victory of the year after opening with three consecutive losses, including a 54-7 setback to Bryan Station in the team's home opener last week at Cardinal Stadium. Clark will try to rebound from the 0-3 start Friday night in a 7:30 p.m. kickoff at Henry Clay.

Matt Ginter wasn't worried after George Rogers Clark opened the season with seven consecutive losses. “We had to test some kids to see who could play where and what we could and couldn't do,” the first-year Clark coach said Wednesday. “When you go over (and play teams in the) 11th Region, it will expose your weaknesses very quickly and it was very helpful for us as coaching staff to see what kids can and can't do and what we needed to work on.” With an early schedule that featured teams such as Bryan Station, Henry Clay and Dunbar, the former George Rogers Clark standout and Major League pitcher figured the Cardinals would come around following the first month of the season.

That's “hard to get a win,” not impossible. The Patriots claimed a victory in one such venue Tuesday night as Lincoln traveled to Wayne County High School and held off the host Cardinals 73-66. “It's a tough win, a great win because any time you come down here and get a win, you've done something good,” Jackson said. “This is a tough place to win, and you've really got to work to earn it. And the kids earned it tonight.” Lincoln relied on a 25-16 second-quarter run to open up a close game and take a 10-point halftime lead.

This time around, the team's emphasis during spring workouts has been strictly football, sprinkled with becoming more familiar with each other. “It takes a year for that transition to (kick) in,” Collins said earlier this week. “The kids understand what we're about and what we expect of them as a program.

Last September, Winchester Sun sports editor Keith Taylor invited me to speak to the Winchester Kiwanis Club. During the speech to club members, I touched on how I got started broadcasting George Rogers Clark High School football and basketball games on the radio in 1987. From 1960-67, my mother, step-father and I lived on a farm near Mays Lick in southern Mason County. As an only child, I had few friends to play with after school. I spent hours shooting hoops at the goal on one of our barns.
