Unlocked cars in Boyle County were again the target of thieves, this time along Lebanon Road early Thursday morning. Boyle County Deputy James Wilcher said nearly 20 cars, all of them unlocked and parked near residences, were hit along a four-mile stretch of Lebanon Road, from the U.S. 127 Bypass to Shadow Trial. Among the items taken in the thefts were two pistols - a 9 mm and a .22-caliber - along with purses, checkbooks, cash and other items. "You name it. Whatever people leave in their cars, they took it," Wilcher said.

Five cars stood ready at the starting line on Wednesday night, their drivers behind them, fingers poised for the countdown. The track was a 60-foot stretch of loose dirt, and the race was over in a matter of seconds. The winner, Cameron Sizemore, took home a trophy and $5. These were not normal race cars - they were remote-controlled and battery-powered. This is the first year that the Garrard County Fair has held such a race. Before this race, there was also a truck pull.

LANCASTER - Bent axles, gaping holes, and mangled sheet metal. And that was before the fun really got started. The Demolition Derby at the Garrard County Fair Tuesday night combined 25 mauled cars, tall trophies, and a cheering crowd. More than 200 people turned out to watch the show, from toddlers and babes-in-arms to venerated Demolition Derby veterans. Following the National Anthem, the derby got started at 8:15 p.m. The competition was organized into large and small vehicle classes.

They started out going after old cars but they ended up getting stories, lots of stories, and the men behind Resurrection Rodz, brothers Jayme and Rodman Phillips, Jackie Ray and Matt Belcher will bend your ear if you're lucky enough to get a seat in their “mancave” on Skyline Drive in Stanford. What draws this unlikely group together is their love of vintage automobiles, but also the thrill of the hunt that's taken them as far away as Georgia in search of vehicles to “resurrect from the grave” Jayme Phillips said.

HARRODSBURG - Snowbirds need cars, sometimes two, but they don't want to drive them to their winter homes. That's where Gary Caton comes in. For the past seven years, Roney Bottom and Caton have hauled cars south for snowbirds. Bottom has retired and Caton is slowing down, but over the years they have spent most of the months from late October until after the holidays hauling vehicles for people trying to get away from snow and cold temperatures. Caton says most people stay in Florida from one to six months.

Laura Sanchez of Danville drives a 1998 Maxima that has more than 175,000 miles on it, and she has no plans to get rid of it. "I have tried to keep it in good running condition," she said, while getting out of her Maxima at a Danville shopping center parking lot. "I keep the oil changed and keep my mechanic busy. " Sanchez said when the time finally comes for her to dump her Maxima, she will not buy a brand new vehicle. "In today's bad economy - and I think it will be bad for a while longer - you have to look at every way to save money, and the best way when it comes to cars is to buy a late-model used car. I think a lot of people will be going the used car route.

I decided to take a quick cruise around eBay. I have a girlfriend who buys lots of clothes, shoes and jewelry online. I can see buying jewelry, but I don't trust that sizes will fit right and I want to be able to slip my tootsie right in a shoe before buying it. I thought about what I've really been shopping for and decided to peruse used car offerings. A search of Honda found a 1999 Honda Accord with 95,000 miles for sale for a current bid of $5,200. Of course, it would have to be picked up in West Chester, Pa. About 36 bids had been placed and only 35 minutes remained in the bidding.

It is no surprise that Calvin Taylor is a self-described "all-purpose Mustang man," especially considering that the Harrodsburg resident's job as a Ford mechanic put him front and center for the car's debut in 1964. Although he became enamored with the cars when they first rolled off the line, there was a long detour before Taylor bought his first Mustang in 1986. "I was drafted into the military in 1965, and when I got back we had a child and that was my main concern," he said.
