On Tuesday, I stopped at a convenient store to get gas and lottery tickets, something I have done frequently. As I pulled out my debit card to pay for my gas and lottery, the clerk informs me I have to pay for the lottery separate with cash.  The clerk tells me that it has always been that way. I have stopped there many of times, and I have always paid with debit because I don't carry cash. The clerk adds that the lottery requires them to only accept cash.  This is not true.

In an attempt to better promote its $20 on the 20th campaign, the Jessamine County Chamber of Commerce launched its cash mob campaign Wednesday afternoon at Bruster's Real Ice Cream, located at 111 N. Plaza Drive. “You know those flash mobs you'll have at malls where one person will get up and sing?” chamber of commerce office manager Myrna Spratt asked. “Well, this is a cash mob, where we will all get together and go mob Bruster's; they don't know we're coming. We're going to buy stuff.” According to chamber director Amy Cloud, each month on the 20th  - as long as it's during the work week - chamber ambassadors will surprise one of its members with a cash mob and spend money at that location.

STANFORD - In a split decision, Lincoln County Fiscal Court voted against preventing residents from using to cash to pay for services at Veterans Park like sports sign-ups. Judge-Executive Jim Adams introduced a proposed amendment at Tuesday's meeting that would have ended the practice of accepting cash for payment for county services at Veterans Park except for concessions sales. Currently, the county has a policy preventing payment for services in cash, with an exemption for all services connected with Veterans Park, Adams said.

Bluegrass Truck Stop on Stewarts Lane was robbed early Sunday morning, and two suspects are in custody, according to police. A Winchester woman was arrested late Thursday afternoon after allegedly embezzling about $24,000 from The Winchester Sun. Michelle Holloman, 38, of 194 Wabash Ave. Apt. 9, was brought in for questioning Thursday afternoon, Winchester Police Capt. James Hall said, after company representatives reported the theft in June. “It seems to be clear cut,” Hall said. “The evidence pointed directly to her. She made no statements to her involvement. With the evidence we had on hand, we felt it was necessary to charge her with a crime.” Following the interview, she was arrested and charged with theft by unlawful taking more than $10,000, which is a felony with a sentence of five to 10 years in prison if convicted.

HARRODSBURG - City police were contacted Tuesday after a wallet was stolen while a woman was shopping at the Goodwill store in Harrodsburg. The wallet contained several credit cards and about $20 in cash. Since January 2012, there have been five thefts of wallets or purses while customers were shopping. The previous thefts at the same location garnered the thief or thieves more than $600 in cash, cell phones, credit cards and personal identifications and papers, Harrodsburg police said.

Redmon of 1095 Hedges Station Road reported that sometime between July 3 and 15, someone broke into the toolbox on his truck and stole several tools. - At 10 p.m. Sunday, Ricky R. Moore, of 1591 Ecton Road reported that someone stole a trailer that he had borrowed from another person. - At 3:32 p.m. Sunday, James A. Mayes of 101 Cherokee Drive reported that while he was making his rounds at the Holiday Inn Express, someone entered the motel and stole cash from the cash drawer.

Sheriff LeeRoy Hardin presented the Boyle County Fiscal Court a check for $4,847.63 Tuesday as reimbursement for Tjard, the drug dog the Fiscal Court helped purchase. The dog is now paid for in full. The payment comes from work the dog has done related to cash and other seizures. According to Hardin, the dog has been able to provide enough income to pay for its vet bills and other expenses. "We appreciate that. You followed through on your commitment," County Judge-Executive Tony Wilder said.

The Jessamine County Fiscal Court has a more than $5 million unencumbered cash balance, according to a financial statement approved at its meeting last Tuesday. The statement, which reflects the court's financial condition as of Feb. 28, 2013, shows the court has brought in more than $18 million in receipts so far for the 2012-2013 fiscal year, including almost $2 million in real property taxes and more than $3.5 million in occupational license fees. The court has paid out more than $12 million in claims, according to the report.

James Walter Cash, 76, of Eubank, passed away Monday, March 4, at Christ Hospital in Cincinnati, Ohio.  Born March 25, 1936, in Walnut Grove, James was a son of the late Walter and Laura Eva McKinney Cash.  He was retired from Keith Pallet Mill and of the Pentecostal faith. He loved hunting, fishing and liked to whittle. Survivors include his wife, Mary Mae Ware Cash, whom he married on Oct. 20, 1961; three sons, Johnny, Mark  and Daniel Cash, all of Eubank; one sister, Helen Dyer of Burnside; and one grandchild, Joseph Cash of Eubank.

More than 1,000 people attended Saturday's Scarecrow Festival at Beech Springs Farm Market Saturday, making it a record year. “I think this is a festival people look forward to every year, where it's just $5 a family, they can come out and enjoy. It's an opportunity to have a great day and not be very expensive for families,” Darren Diguette said. Diguette is the director of the Clark County Association for Handicapped Citizens, which oversees programs like STRIDE. Program participants spent the day at the festival, helping with games and meeting community members.

Charged - Darrell L. Hawkins, 34, of Nicholasville, was charged Wednesday with possession of drug paraphernalia and was served a warrant. Reports - At 8:21 a.m. Wednesday, officers were called to 15 Kittison Drive after someone entered the residence and took several items. - At 9:48 a.m. Wednesday, a person reported a theft of cash. - At 3:48 p.m. Wednesday, officers were called to 210 E. Broadway after someone broke into the home and took a Blu-RayDVD¿player, a Wii and video games.
