Last week's Maximum Velocity Track & Field Academy at Centre College was not just a chance for campers to get pointers from Olympians. Instead, the Centre track and field athletes who worked the camp also got a chance to get pointers from being around the all-star staff of camp clinicians that included former Olympic medal winners. Senior Nick Niehaus, who holds the Centre record in the 400-meter hurdles in 53.44 seconds, spent three days with Kevin Young, the man who has owned the world record in the 400 hurdles since 1992.

For many college students, "pulling an all-nighter" is a familiar routine typically accomplished with copious amounts of caffeine. Often, the go-to option is a so-called "energy shot" drink that boasts a special blend of energy-boosting ingredients. New research by a behavioral neuroscience professor and her students at Centre College calls the popular drink - and the extra boost it claims to provide - into question. And their preliminary findings are creating quite a buzz. According to the recent study, "The effect of energy drinks on visual attention task performance," led by Centre's KatieAnn Skogsberg, assistant professor of psychology and behavioral neuroscience, the energy drinks may be no more effective than other sources of caffeine.

Jamie Nieto is a two-time Olympian who says he is not really an overall sports fan - “I never really watch sports on TV,” he said. However, he is a fan of promoting track and field with youngsters, and that's why the talented high jumper is back in Danville for the second time in three years working at the Maximum Velocity Track & Field Academy at Centre College that started Wednesday night. Nieto, 36, just missed earning a medal at the 2004 and 2012 Olympics. He is a three-tme U.S. outdoor champion (2003, 2004, 2012)

Elysse Petrie is giving her parents a break. Like so many parents of young athletes, Petrie's parents shuttled their daughter to competitions near and far for years. And when it came time for her to choose a college, she said staying close to home was an important factor in her decision. The Boyle County pitcher plans to play for Centre College, and she made her commitment official Monday at a signing ceremony at Boyle. “Probably one of the biggest reasons why is it was close to home where my parents could come see me play,” Petrie said.

Karapandzic, who primarily has worked as a painter for the college since 2002, is noted among his peers for being an enjoyable and loyal co-worker, one who is committed to his role. Martha Raddatz told one on herself Sunday during her commencement address to Centre College's Class of 2013. The highly decorated and respected ABC foreign correspondent who has reported from war zones around the world, the White House and the Pentagon, the woman who held Vice President Joe Biden and Congressman Paul Ryan in check during their feisty debate at Centre last fall, never made it through college. Raddatz told the crowd at Newlin Hall that she had given a commencement speech at a small college a few years back and one of the newly-minted graduates asked her how she could follow in Raddatz's footsteps.

When Ibby Jadoon receives his diploma today, Centre College will be saying goodbye to one of its best and brightest. Jadoon is a bonafide Big Man on Campus (Academic Division), having earned a prestigious Fulbright Scholarship and being chosen by his fellow seniors to deliver the Honors Convocation address. He's also president of Centre's Muslim Student Association, which has all of four members. “That was a tough election,” he joked. Jadoon's presence has been felt beyond Centre in the four years he's been in Danville, and that's not counting his study-abroad trips to South Africa, Ecuador and Turkey.
