Dr. Neil Shubin, a leading paleontologist and author of “Your Inner Fish: A Journey into the 3.5-Billion-Year History of the Human Body,” will speak at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in Centre's Newlin Hall. Shubin, a professor of organismal biology and anatomy at the University of Chicago, co-discovered Tiktaalik in 2004, a fossil fish that sheds light on a pivotal point in the history of life on Earth: when the very first fish ventured onto land. Tiktaalik is considered to be the definitive transitional vertebrate, and one of the most important “missing links” between aquatic and terrestrial vertebrates.

They have made a habit of making the finals of their conference tournament, and the Centre College men weren't about to miss their chance to play a title game on their home floor. The Colonels advanced to their eighth consecutive final - and their first in their own gym - by fighting off Oglethorpe for an 89-80 victory in a Southern Athletic Association tournament semifinal Saturday night at Alumni Gymnasium. They needed their highest-scoring game of the season and their second-best shooting night to outlast Oglethorpe and earn a berth in today's championship game.

The time for caring about how you win has passed. For the Centre College men, all that matters is whether you win. That's why Centre coach Greg Mason wasn't sweating the small stuff today after the Colonels fought off Berry for a 74-58 victory in the first round of the Southern Athletic Association tournament at Alumni Gymnasium. Centre didn't do some things as well as it usually does, but the Colonels responded well when Berry brought the fight to them, and that was enough for Mason, whose team is clinging to the hope of earning an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament but must win this tourney to do so. “Berry's been playing pretty well recently ... so I knew we were in for a battle today, and we got it. Any time you're in a tournament, you're going to have teams playing with everything on the line,” Mason said.

MEMPHIS - With just over three minutes left in the first half, hot-shooting Centre College had a 39-14 lead over host Rhodes College Sunday. However, the Colonels had to survive a missed 3-pointer at the buzzer to win 76-74 and earn the right to host the Southern Athletic Association Tournament. Centre and Rhodes (16-9) tied for first place with 11-3 records, but the Colonels got the No. 1 tourney seed by virtue of a sweep of Rhodes. Centre (18-5) will host Berry, the No. 8 seed, Friday at 1 p.m. If the Colonels win, they will play the Sewanee-Oglethorpe survivor Saturday at 6 p.m. The tourney championship game will be Sunday at 2 p.m. Josh Karsner had 14 points, including four 3-pointers, in the first half at Rhodes.

Though Jordan Shewmaker grew up in Perryville, he never imagined becoming a key part of the Centre College community. Shewmaker, 20, is a junior majoring in government. Though he has always worked hard, largely due to the example set by his late great-grandmother Imogene Reynolds, he never imagined being accepted to Centre College let alone becoming deeply involved in local, state and even national politics. While he and other Centre students were a key part of the October vice-presidential debate held on campus, Shewmaker has used what some have called an “old soul” to take advantage of many other opportunities beyond his wildest dreams.
