The chairman of the Winchester Municipal Utilities Commission submitted his resignation Tuesday, marking the latest departure amid public uproar over a mishandled raise for the utility's top manager. Doug Oliver, who has served as chairman since May, conveyed his plans in a letter to Mayor Ed Burtner. According to the missive, Oliver acted on a request from Burtner, who suggested the resignation was "in the best interest of WMU and the community. The last 10 years have been eventful and productive for George Dean as chairman of the Valley View River Authority. And besides that, he's had a lot of fun and excitement, he said. Like the time he got a choppy emergency ride across the river in a small boat to check on the ferry's tugboat. "The river was 20 feet over flood stage, and I had to check to make sure the tugboat was secure," he recalled. "Charlie Hall took me across in his boat," he said with a chuckle, at the memory of the hairy ride in the rising water.

Dear Editor, The newspaper has made "much ado about nothing" in its coverage of the decision last week by the Danville school board to elect Marvin Swann as board chairman. Now that you have admitted that you were wrong to describe the board's executive session Jan. 22, as a "secret meeting" that "may have been illegal," what's left to merit the top-of-page-one coverage of the board's routine, biannual selection of a chairman? There doesn't seem to be much, other than the fact that, based on the 3-2 vote, there was obviously some disagreement among the board members as to who should be chairman.
