The last 10 years have been eventful and productive for George Dean as chairman of the Valley View River Authority. And besides that, he's had a lot of fun and excitement, he said. Like the time he got a choppy emergency ride across the river in a small boat to check on the ferry's tugboat. "The river was 20 feet over flood stage, and I had to check to make sure the tugboat was secure," he recalled. "Charlie Hall took me across in his boat," he said with a chuckle, at the memory of the hairy ride in the rising water.

The Lincoln County Board of Education honored one of its own recently as they hosted the Kentucky School Boards Association Central Kentucky Regional meeting. Virginia Shaw was recognized for her many years of service to education in Lincoln County and around the state. Shaw taught in Lincoln County and served on the board of education. Since her retirement, Shaw has worked diligently with the Kentucky Retired Teachers Association, advocating increased benefits for retired teachers.

LIBERTY - A Casey County Extension District Board member says he has taken a lot of heat because the county agricultural agent did not attend the county fair. Greg Goode, vice chairman, said he wants the extension service agents more involved in the county fair and asked why the agent was not represented. "I want to pass the heat on when it gets too hot, he told the board, apparently after hearing several complain about the fact that the agent had not been involved in the county fair activities.

LIBERTY - Malcolm Wolford, 86, of Liberty, died Friday, at Hospice Unit Baptist Northeast in LaGrange. Born April 12, 1919, in Adair County, he was the son of the late M.V. and Claudia Goode Wolford. He was the former mayor of Liberty and was the owner of Wolford Brothers. He served on the school board and the Casey County Economic Development board. He was a member and chairman of Lake Cumberland Area Development Board Council on Aging. He was chairman of the Casey County Apple Festival and was a veteran of World War II. He was a member of Westside Christian Church.

Park board elects officers HARRODSBURG - The Anderson-Dean Community Park board elected officers earlier this week. Elected were Bob Davis, chairman; Tony Shirley, vice chairman; Mike Van Gilder, secretary; and Elaine Schroeder, treasurer. They will serve until January. Davis said a nominating committee will name a slate of officers and new officers will be elected in December. They will serve one year, as required by the board's newly-adopted bylaws. Fiscal Court hires financial secretary HARRODSBURG - Sandra "Sandy" Sanders has been hired by Mercer County Fiscal Court as receptionist and financial secretary in the office of Mercer County Judge-Executive John Trisler.

After meeting for nearly four hours in executive session to discuss the performance of Superintendent Pam Rogers, the Boyle County Board of Education took no action on Rogers' annual evaluation before adjourning after 2 a.m. Friday morning. "We have completed the evaluation, we just haven't acted on it yet," board chairman Preston Miles said. Rogers, who was hired as superintendent in 1998, is approaching the end of a four-year contract that pays her $100,621 a year, and provides her with a car and four weeks of vacation.

HARRODSBURG - Bill Wickliffe announced his resignation Tuesday from the Anderson-Dean Community Park Board. Wickliffe has been a member of the park board for 13 years and its chairman for six. "I recall when we first started and raised around $240,000 and completely paid off the first 100 acres of the park," Wickliffe said about his first year with the board. Mark Bryant, the park's director, said Wickliffe's enthusiasm will be missed. "He has always wanted to see the park expand and continue to grow and has been an important part of the community," Bryant said.

STANFORD - Members of the Lincoln County Industrial Board are hoping a miracle will help them complete the long-awaited industrial park this month, and on Wednesday it looked like that wish might have come true. Bill Miracle, Stanford branch manager of Farmers National Bank, was unanimously named chairman of the board. Veteran chairman Bill Fox's resignation was effective Dec. 31. Board member Jeff Ralston said he supported the motion to appoint Miracle due to his experience in the banking business, real estate business and building and development industry.

LIBERTY - A local businessman, who has served 16 years on the Casey County Board of Education, was recognized Thursday night by the Liberty City Council. Donald Sweeney, a real estate broker, received an appreciation plaque from the city and county governments that recognized and expressed appreciation for his service to the county school system. Sweeney, cousin of Mayor Steve Sweeney, is a Liberty native. He did not seek re-election to the board post. Today is his final day as a board member.

STANFORD - Long-time chairman of the Lincoln County Industrial Development Authority, Bill Fox, announced his retirement this month, effective Dec. 31, the end of his current term. Fox declined to comment, but his fellow board members said Fox was selfless in donating his time and efforts to the betterment of Lincoln County and will be missed. "He's done an excellent job and all the board members are very, very thankful for all his hard work and dedication," said board member Jeff Ralston.
