Joshua Adams has already accomplished a lot in his 10-year-old life. The Wilmore Elementary School student finished in third place out of 100 students in his age group at the United States Chess Federation's Queen City Classic in Cincinnati on April 1. "This is an amazing accomplishment," said Joshua's stepfather, John Price. Price and his wife, Kristen, said Joshua's been playing chess for almost two years. He first became interested when he learned from Jason Tate, a teacher at Wilmore Elementary.

CHESS TOURNAMENT The New Year Blitz Chess Tournament will be at 6 p.m. Monday, Jan. 7, at the Winchester/Clark County Parks and Recreation department, College Park Gym, Wheeler Avenue. No admission fee will be charged. TLC GROUP TO MEET The TLC (Tender, Loving, Care) Group, retired health professionals, will meet at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Vittorio's Cucinara, across from Leed's Center for the Arts on North Main Street. COMMUNITY PRAYER SERVICE The second annual Community Prayer Service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 12 at Grace Bible Church, 117 N. Main St. Members of the community clergy will offer scripture readings, reflections and prayer for the following community members: civil servants, law enforcement, fire and emergency personnel, teachers, school administrators, medical personnel, military personnel, judiciary and judicial system personnel and elected officials.

Pleasant Retreat plans events: LANCASTER - A number of free and discounted events are planned at the Governor Owsley House at Pleasant Retreat Sunday through Oct. 4 as part of "Garrard County Week at Pleasant Retreat. " Half-price tours will be given at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Sept. 30 and Oct 2. A 10 percent discount will be offered in the gift shop Sept. 30 and refreshments will be served in the Camp House on Oct. 2. A free candlelight tour will take place at 7 p.m. Oct. 3, and breakfast will be served in the Camp House from 7:30-11 a.m. Oct. 4. A $5 donation is suggested for the breakfast.

Potluck dinner will begin at 6:30 p.m. and the regular meeting will follow at 7 p.m. Anyone interested in joining the club is invited to attend.

The George Rogers Clark chess team recently competed at a chess tournament held on the campus of Paul Lawrence Dunbar High School in Lexington. The team placed sixth in overall team standings. Henry Clay placed first, followed by Monticello and Montgomery County. Leading the GRC team was Clay Dixon. Dixon placed third in the U-400 category followed by teammates John Dixon and Wesley Renye, who placed fourth and fifth respectively. "The team members worked harder than I expected.

Five students from the Clark County Day Treatment Center are participating in the Susan Polger World Open Chess Tournament beginning today in Chicago. Not bad for a group of students who learned to play the game last fall. When Day Treatment Center Principal Greg Hollon introduced chess into the school shortly after being hired in 2010, he had no idea how quickly his students would progress with the game in a such short time. Hollon, an avid chess player himself, said he brought chess into the classrooms at the center because he felt like the skills needed to succeed in chess were the skills his students needed to succeed in life.

The Winchester/Clark County Parks and Recreation Chess Club recently held the March Madness Chess Tournament.   Open section winners were Daniel Brenneman, first place; Craig Sheehan, second place; John Joseph, first place, U1300.   Scholastic section winners were Benjamin Lindemuth, first place, K8; Taylor Baker, first place, K5; Emily Vires, second place, K5; Kristen Griffett, first place, K3.   The chess club also held the fourth annual Green Grass Scholastic on April 16.   K3 section winners were Samuel Leigers, first place; Kristen Griffett, second place, following tie-break with Samuel; Elijah McDonald, third place; Montana Leigers, fourth place.

The Clark County Activity Coalition held its monthly meeting Feb. 21 at College Park Gym. Co-Chairperson Gina Lang called the meeting to order and gave an update on the Winchester Weigh Down, a 10-week weight loss competition that began Jan. 19. There are more than 125 participants this year and they have lost a total of 466 pounds so far. The competition has five weeks to go, and winners will be announced at the Joe Reed Memorial Heart Walk...

The Clark County Activity Coalition held its monthly meeting Dec.14 at College Park Gym and included a potluck lunch to celebrate the holidays. Laura Sheehan, proprietor of Full Circle Market, became a member. Mandy Faulconer and Geri Remley with Parks and Recreation reported the pool is on target for completion in May. The following activities are scheduled: step aerobics beginning in January, chess tournament Jan. 16, disc golf Ice Bowl tournament Jan. 30 and volleyball starting Jan. 4.
