Danville's new smoking ordinance goes into effect Friday. The ordinance bans smoking in all public buildings within the city limits. Winchester City Commissioner Shannon Cox has been designated mayor pro-tem in the absence of former City Commissioner JoEllen Reed, who resigned from the commission last month due to an address change. The announcement was made Tuesday at a regular meeting of the commission. Reed had been a commissioner for many years and had to give up her seat because she recently moved outside the city limits to a new residence near the Old Boonesboro Road. In other business: - The commission gave second reading to an ordinance implementing a tax rate of 19.5 cents per $100 of assessed value on watercraft and motor vehicles for the calendar year 2009.

LANCASTER - As Lancaster prepares for an Aug. 19 vote on whether to allow alcohol sales, there are a number of questions about exactly what legalization will mean for the city. According to Nathan Jones with the Kentucky Alcohol Beverage Control, the number of packaged liquor stores that would be allowed in the area is based on a formula regarding the population of Garrard County, not Lancaster as a city. Licenses for packaged liquor stores would be awarded on the basis of one license for every 2,300 people in the county.

Nancy Stone, director of the Jessamine County Chamber of Commerce, was overcome with joy when she learned that Nicholasville was named best small city for affordable homes by Money magazine. "I was very surprised, but I was pleased because I think it's going to bring positive attention to Nicholasville," she said. "I've already gotten a phone call from a man in Colorado who likes Kentucky and doesn't like the hectic life in Denver. " Stone said the man is planning a trip to Nicholasville in the coming weeks to check the city out with his family as he might be considering a move to Kentucky.

Dear Editor, I would like to respond to Linda Lussier's recent letter to the editor concerning the shooting of her dog. My heart goes out to her. I hope that the Danville Police Department did not dismiss the shooting of her dog, just because it was a dog. A state mandated requirement prompted the Nicholasville City Commission to make changes to its business tax. Effective Jan. 1, 2009, businesses that operate within the city limits will be taxed 1 percent on their net profits. "This is not something that the city instigated," Commissioner Johnny Collier said. "I just want everyone to know that this was mandated by the state. " The updated law is being implemented to satisfy state legislation requiring cities to amend their business tax laws.

LANCASTER - Lancaster residents will have the opportunity to vote on alcohol sales in the city Aug. 19. Garrard County Judge-Executive John Wilson said a petition that had been circulating succeeded in getting enough signatures to bring the issue to the ballot. The petition seeks the sale of alcohol both in stores and by the drink in restaurants in Lancaster. Areas outside the city limits are not included. Wilson said the petition, which had been circulating about a month, was handed over to County Clerk Stacy May with 550 signatures.

Clark County firefighters and Winchester Fire-EMS move a patient to a waiting ambulance after two pickup trucks collided head on just outside the city limits on Two Mile Road. Two victims were transported to Clark Regional Medical Center for treatment. The wreck happened shortly before 3 p.m. Wednesday. Further information was not available at press time.

Dear Editor, Those who think school shouldn't be called off for any reason whatsoever should stop and think about the safety of the kids. Yes, city streets, for the most part, are kept travel worthy. But what about the numerous county roads outside of the city limits that take a while longer to clean, especially if there is ice to contend with? A school bus driver has a most important cargo to haul to and from school - young kids. And a 40-foot bus is not an all-wheel drive vehicle.
