RICHMOND — The Clark Middle eighth-grade boys’ basketball team finished the season on top. The Eagles concluded a successful season with an exciting 40-35 triumph over Scott County in the finals of the Bluegrass Middle School Conference Tournament Friday night at Michael B. Caudill Middle School. Clark (17-3) defeated Royal Springs and Harrison County in the first two rounds and earned a spot in the finals with a win over East Jessamine Thursday night. The Eagles trailed 15-6 in the first quarter, but rallied and took a 29-267 advantage at the break.

The Clark County Board of Education has stuck to its guns. What repercussions might come from that remain to be seen. During its regular meeting Tuesday, the board revisited the middle school merger and the renovations to two schools that would help the district remove Category 5 schools, or those deemed to be in a state of urgent need of replacement or repair. After hearing from members of the community and two representatives from the state, the board continued to delay the merged middle school as part of the current facilities plan.

Clark County's newest elementary school has a name. The school being constructed on Mt. Sterling Road will be called the Willis H. Justice Elementary School when it opens its doors in the fall. The name was chosen by popular vote on a survey on the district's website and the Clark County Board of Education approved the name at its regular meeting Tuesday. The name was a landslide winner in the poll, garnering 812 votes, while the second-place vote-getter, Veterans Memorial Elementary School, had just 272 votes.

The Clark County Board of Education's scheduled meeting today with the Kentucky Department of Education has been canceled. The reasons for the cancellation are not immediately clear, but board member Michael McGowan requested the meeting be canceled after being told he could not attend the meeting. Originally, Michael Kuduk and Judy Hicks were invited to meet with members of state agencies to discuss the board's recent vote to halt the district's current facilities plan. Kuduk was invited as board chairman and Hicks as a representative of the board's dissenting vote in the matter.

In a letter sent to the board from Kentucky Education Commissioner Terry Holliday, seven steps are laid out for the board to return to the current facilities plan. Failure to comply will result in a loss of Support Education Excellence in Kentucky money for the district. SEEK money is awarded to school districts based on attendance. Last year, the district received $17,582,098 in SEEK funding, or about 40 percent of the district's general fund of $38,237,557. Next year, the school district expects to receive around $17,471,215.

Recreation - The Winchester-Clark County Parks and Recreation Department will sponsor a “Run for the Paws” 5K race at 2 p.m. on May 19 at BCTC. The race will benefit the Clark County animal shelter. Pre-registration cost is $20 plus donation item and $30 and donation item day of the race. The event is free for participants in the Winchester Weigh Down program. FFA greenhouse sale under way The Clark County FFA's greenhouse sale at George Rogers Clark High School will be open from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. through Friday and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. Two potential agenda items to discuss the renovation of George Rogers Clark High School and Clark County Middle School were tabled by a 3-2 vote by the Clark County Board of Education Tuesday night. The items, which would have set the renovation amounts for turning GRC into a middle school and Clark Middle into an elementary school, were removed from the agenda for discussion early in the meeting. Judy Hicks moved to accept the agenda with the two items. Beth Griffith supplied a second to the motion, but Michael Kuduk, Michael McGowan and Ashley Ritchie voted against the measure.

The Clark County Board of Education has approved the school staffing allocation for 2013-14. The board approved a measure at a special meeting Tuesday night that set the staffing for the district's schools for the next year. This plan includes the new elementary school, Willis H. Justice Elementary, and supports the change the board approved at the last regular meeting to the district facilities plan. Since the board altered the original plan from merging middle schools at George Rogers Clark High School, a new allocation plan had to be created.
