McDowell Wellness Center is offering sessions of its popular Boot Camp to get individuals in shape while losing weight. A Morning Boot Camp will begin March 11 and will meet from 5:20 a.m. to 6:20 a.m. It meets each Monday, Wednesday and Friday. A Women's Only Boot Camp, specifically designed to help overweight women get in shape while losing weight, will begin March 18, meeting from 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. At the initial class, participants will weigh, check their body-fat percentage and take body measurements.

HARRODSBURG - A suggestion by a couple of community members has led to a series of cooking classes sponsored by the Arts Council of Mercer County. Arts Council founder Joy Mosko said she approached Chef Nic Wisecarver, formerly of Mermaids Bar & Bistro, to participate. “He was excited about it,” Mosko said. “So I met with the ladies and hashed out the details.” The ladies - Bonnie Tanner and Lois Mateus - also opened their kitchens up to the participating chefs.

“This school saved my child’s life.” That comment is sure to perk up the ears of any school administrator. When said to me several years ago, I had to inquire about the reason. The explanation was long, but here’s the bottom line. The woman’s son had come from a public school to our private institution for one primary reason: class size. He had attended first grade in a classroom of 26, and our school had classes no larger than 12. Just having more of the teacher’s attention turned the student’s life around.

Many teachers in Jessamine County schools don’t believe class sizes are small enough to teach effectively, according to a survey released last week. Meanwhile, district officials say sizes are reasonable and are recommending a teacher raise next year after the board cut staffing allocations in January. The Teaching, Empowering, Leading and Learning (TELL) survey was administered online during March and solicited anonymous responses from every school-based educator in Kentucky about facilities, support and leadership.
