A Clay City woman was transported to the University of Kentucky after a wreck on the Mountain Parkway Friday. Clark County Sheriff Berl Perdue said 35-year-old Thelma Lewis was traveling on the Parkway when part of her tire came loose, causing her to lose control of the vehicle. The vehicle hit the side of the Interstate 64 overpass bridge, causing it to flip over. Lewis received a severe head laceration, but Perdue said her injuries were not believed to be life threatening. She was flown to UK as a precautionary measure.

The husband of a Clay City woman killed on Interstate 64 in January has filed suit against the driver of the truck that hit her. The suit was filed Feb. 23 in Clark Circuit Court by James Burgher, the husband of Donna Burgher, against John Peavler and D&D Machinery Movers and Millwrights. The defendants filed their answer Friday.   According to the Clark County Sheriff’s Office, the Burghers were traveling east on I-64 in the early morning hours of Jan. 29 when they saw a crash in the westbound lanes.

The Telephone Pioneers met for their monthly luncheon June 11 at Kathy's in Clay City. Those in attendance were Bonnie Biggerstaff, Annette Crossfield, Gordon Long, Martha Long, Elizabeth Prather, Betty A. Reed, Allen Rogers, Mary Rogers, Mary Rupsis, Bill Thiry and Nancy Thiry. There will be a Pioneer Appreciation Day July 11 starting at 6 p.m. at Applebee's Park in Lexington. Each family member is asked to bring $5 worth of food for a food drive to kick off the back-to-school food programs.

Geraldine Wells, 78, of Raleigh, N.C., passed away on Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2013, at the Sunrise of Raleigh Nursing Home. She was born in Powell County on Jan. 22, 1935, to the late Lloyd and Mabel Martin Wells; however, she grew up in Winchester. She was a graduate of Georgetown College and Winchester High School. She worked for many years at IBM and retired from there in Raleigh. She was a longtime member of Hayes-Barton Baptist Church in Raleigh. Survivors include three brothers, Jack Wells and James Donald Wells of Winchester, and Harold Wells of Maryland; a sister, Norma Bailey of Iowa; a number of nieces and nephews; and special friends, Nancy and John Stainback and family of North Carolina.

Ambrose Ray Curtis, 74, of Winchester, died at his winter home in Valrico, Fla. on Feb. 19, 2013. Born in Clay City, he was the son of the late Raymond and Pearl Barnett Curtis. Ambrose Curtis was a partner in the former B&C Wholesale and a former member of the Stanton Housing Authority Board, the Powell County Jaycees and the Powell County Lions Club. He was a member and former deacon of the Stanton Christian Church. In addition to his parents he was also preceded in death by his brother, Jackie Curtis and by his sister, Phyllis Curtis Rose.

Carol Strange Dennis, 72, of Lexington, passed away Monday, Dec. 24, 2012, at the Hospice Care Center in Lexington.  Carol was born Oct. 31, 1940, to Fred and Mildred Strange. She was a retired self-employed business owner.
