LANCASTER - Garrard County coach Mark Scenters was the first to admit it wasn't the prettiest win he has ever had, but he wasn't about to give it back. Tied at 0-0 late in the first half, the Golden Lions gave up an 88-yard touchdown run to trail at the intermission before they rallied with a strong second half to hold off Clay County 15-14 Friday night in the season-opening Farmers National Bank Hall of Fame Bowl at Dyehouse Stadium. Both teams struggled offensively throughout the first half.

Clay County defensive lineman Jacob Hyde got a bit worried when Florida State defensive coordinator Mark Stoops was named Kentucky's new coach. Hyde was the first in-state player to verbally commit to Kentucky and didn't know if his commitment would be honored by Stoops. “Not knowing what was going to happen with the coach was hard,” said Hyde, who will play in the National Guard Border Bowl Jan. 12 against the Tennessee all-stars. “I did not commit to a coaching staff.¿I committed to the university.

Manchester in Clay County is about 80 miles and 90 minutes from Danville. It would seem an unusual stretch of highway to travel to see a psychiatrist. Yet, Clay County Sheriff Kevin Johnson said “carloads” of residents there made that trip regularly to see Dr. Melborne Williams. They did not come to seek counseling from Williams, Johnson speculated, they came to get prescriptions for Xanax and other controlled drugs. In the past year, 12 Clay County residents who were Williams' patients were found dead of accidental drug overdoses, leading the state Board of Medical Licensure to issue an emergency suspension of Williams' medical license last week.  Johnson's criminal investigation into the “direct link” between the overdoses and the drugs prescribed by Williams is ongoing, and other law enforcement agencies also are looking into the deaths, he said.

The Boyle County boys spent most of their game Tuesday night trying to catch Clay County, only to lose their lead in the fourth quarter and fall 58-51 at Manchester. Boyle (3-1) fell behind 13-0 and trailed 15-5 after one quarter but battled back to take a 40-38 lead with 6 minutes remaining. The Rebels led by five points near the midpoint of the fourth period, but Clay (5-0) turned the tables and took its own five-point lead with 46 seconds to go. The Tigers then sealed their win at the free-throw line, where they were 16 for 20. Brett Jones scored 21 points for Boyle, and Hagen Tyler added 13. Micah Miniard had eight rebounds for the Rebels.

BOWLING GREEN - The second time around, overtime belonged to Lincoln County. Diddle Arena. Lincoln scored the first four points of overtime to gain the upper hand in a tightly contested game, then protected that lead to extend its stay at the state tournament for at least one more day. “What a ballgame.
