The George Rogers Clark High School speech and debate team recently competed in a speech tournament at Lafayette High School. Genna Petrey led the team while competing in broadcasting. Petrey placed second in the commercial copy round, receiving a score of 97. Also competing in broadcasting were Clay Dixon, receiving a score of 96; Kate Evans, 96; Ben Petrey, 92; Cody Cox, 92; Grayson Brookshire, 90; Tiffany Toler, 90; and Hope Burus, 87 Hope Burus also competed in declamation, receiving a high score of 82. Kate Evans received a 90 in declamation.

The Winchester Shawnee Running Club recently competed in the state AAU meet at Louisville Male High School. The team advanced several members to the multi-state regional to be held July 12-15 at Illinois Wesleyan College in Bloomington, Ill. The top eight at the state meet in each event advance to the Illinois competition. Advancing for the girls' team was Aiyanna Jones, who placed first in the 11-year-old discus competition with a throw of 42-03. Jones is the sister of former Clark track standout Tristan Jones.

The George Rogers Clark boys cross country team pulled off a three-peat in the conference meet Thursday night at Wolfe County. The Cardinals coasted to a near perfect score of 16 to Powell County's 55 and Wolfe County's 59. Clark placed six runners ? Alex White, Brandon Bailey, William Pope, Colton Lewis, Clay Dixon and Amos Gapp ? on the all-conference team. Powell County's Austin Monnett also was an all-conference selection. In girls competition, the Lady Cardinals captured their second straight conference title with a perfect score of 15. Tiffany Toler received the conference GPA award in a four-way tie with teammate Taylor Welch, Powell County's Kasey Reed and Terri Spencer of Wolfe County.

Robert Stotsin Clay, Jr., 55, died Monday, Jan. 3, 2011, after an extended illness.   Robby was the son of Robert Stotsin Clay Sr. of Winchester and the late Betty Jean Vanhoose Clay.   He is survived by his father and siblings, Dana M. Clay, Kendall A. Clay, Tony (Jennie) Clay, Liz (Dodd) Dixon, Julie (Lee) Carlisle; eight nieces and nephews, Amber (Jas) Smith, Darik Dixon, Ethan Dixon, Clay Dixon, John Wesley Dixon, Caroline Carlisle, Elliott Stotsin Carlisle and Katie Jane Clay.

The George Rogers Clark Cross Country team concluded the regular season with a meet at Berea College Thursday night. The Lady Cards placed first and the boys squad placed second in a field of 13 schools. Tiffany Toler won the girls race with a time of 21:14. Rockcastle County's Laura Dullins was second, followed by Clark's Kate Evans, who placed third with a 22:26. Clark's Lindy Darnell was fourth overall with a 22:33. Rounding out top finishers at the meet was Janie Ward of Model who placed fifth.

The Fox reunion was at Strode Station School on Sunday, Sept. 6. Frank Fox Vermillion presided. He recognized the deaths of two members of the Fox family, Lillie Kate Parrish Keene and Edward Taylor. There were 80 present. The George Rogers Clark cross country team competed Tuesday night in the conference championship meet, with the boys' team running away with top honors, claiming the team's first ever title. The race was held in a steady rain with several creek crossings on the course. The Cardinals were led by senior Paul Wyatt who completed the 5K course in 19:40.89. Anthony Johnson of Powell County was third, followed by Menifee County's Robert Harmon in third place. Clark dominated the middle tier of race finishers claiming the next six spots.

The Benjamin Clay and Hester Parrish Fox Reunion was held Sept. 3 at Strode Station Elementary School. Frank Vermillion presided. There were 84 in attendance. Tiffany Toler has one goal in mind when she competes in the KHSAA¿Class 3A state meet today at the University of Louisville. Toler will run in the 3200-meter event and will be making her second straight appearance in the state meet. Toler was 20th a year ago and wants to finish in the Top 20 again this time around. She also seeks to break her personal best time of 12:29 in the 3200 against the state’s top performers and is confident she can set a new mark. “I’m competing against better competition and I’ll run faster,” she said.

The George Rogers Clark boys tennis team defeated Paris 8-1 Monday at the Winchester Country Club. In singles, Christian Colvard defeated Jorge Jackson 6-1, Troy True beat Scott Ramsey 6-1, Chris Bourque defeated Toribio Powell 6-1, Wes Conkwright beat Justin Moore 6-1 and Preston Blair won 6-1. Ian Rowe lost to William Desoroux 7-6 (4) and 6-1. In doubles action, the tandem of John Rupard and Christian Colvard defeated Ethan Gibson and Taylor Douglas 6-0, while True and Brooks Harrison beat Frankie Bradford and Michael Regard 6-1. Mark Thomas and Irvin Juarez defeated the duo of Nick Leer and Garrett West 6-0 to complete the sweep in doubles.

The George Rogers Clark Cross Country team is set to compete in the KHSAA Region 7 Class 3A championship Saturday at Lykins Park. The Cardinals are led by senior Alex White, the defending regional champion. White currently is ranked ninth in the state, the highest ranking ever for a Clark cross country runner. Clark sophomore Grayson Brookshire also figures to be among the top runners in the meet. The Cards will face tough competition from a group of Pulaski County sophomores -   Jimmy Goldson, Mason Blevins, Austin Hyden and Mason Stevens all of whom figure into the race.

The George Rogers Clark High School boys and girls cross country teams placed second in the seventh annual George Rogers Clark Coaches' Classic Saturday at Lykins Park. The event featured 26 teams from across the state and 427 runners. The meet served as a tuneup for the Region 7 Class 3A and 2A  in November at Lykins Park. “Last year we were one of the biggest races in Kentucky and we doubled our race size Saturday,” Clark coach Dodd Dixon said. In the boys race, North Laurel claimed top honors with a low score of 49. The Cardinals placed second with a score of 65 followed by Madison Central third with a 97. Harlan County was fourth (116)

The George Rogers Clark girls softball team saw its six-game winning streak come to an end with a 4-3 loss to rival Montgomery County on Thursday in Mount Sterling. The Lady Cardinals (14-3) collected eight hits, but committed three errors. Montgomery County took the lead for good with a pair of runs in the third inning and tallied two more in the fourth to hold off the Lady Cardinals. The Lady Indians upped their winning streak to four games and improved to 10-2 on the season. Rebecca Strange paced Clark’s offense with a single and a sole home run in the sixth inning.

Clay Dixon will be following in his father’s footsteps in the state cross country meet today at the Kentucky Horse Park. Dodd Dixon, currently the cross country coach at George Rogers Clark, was part of the last team that reached the state event in 1980. Dodd was a junior three decades ago when he competed in the state meet. Like his father, Clay is making his first appearance as a junior. “It’s neat,” Dodd said. “There have only been three boys cross country teams that have made it to state.
