The George Rogers Clark chess team recently competed at a chess tournament held on the campus of Paul Lawrence Dunbar High School in Lexington. The team placed sixth in overall team standings. Henry Clay placed first, followed by Monticello and Montgomery County. Leading the GRC team was Clay Dixon. Dixon placed third in the U-400 category followed by teammates John Dixon and Wesley Renye, who placed fourth and fifth respectively. "The team members worked harder than I expected.

The descendants of Benjamin Clay and Hester Parrish Fox met Sunday, Sept. 2, at Strode Station Elementary School. Frank Fox Vermillion presided, and Ret. Gen. Eldon Fox II gave the devotional. The AAU-affiliated Winchester Shawnee Running Club is heading to a national meet. Three members of the team from Winchester qualified for nationals last weekend in a meet held at Illinois Wesleyan University in Bloomington, Ill.. Aiyanna Jones placed first in the discus and second in the shot put. Jones set a new regional 6B AAU record in the discus with her throw of 61-03. Jones is a fifth-grader at Strode Station Elementary. Lexxus Graham placed third in the long jump and Clay Dixon placed second in the boys javelin.

After two weeks of competition, the George Rogers Clark High School boys' cross country team remains undefeated. The team captured top honors this week in a multi-team meet at Powell County. David Lane placed first overall at the meet. On the 2.5k course, Lane posted a 9:07 finish. Lane was followed by Clark senior Paul Wyatt, who placed second with a time of 9:52. Brandon Bailey placed third with a time of 10:10.92. The Cardinals were unable to repeat a perfect sweep of the top five slots when Powell County's Anthony Johnson placed fourth overall.

The George Rogers Clark indoor track team opened its season at College Park Gym last weekend and placed first in the three-team meet. Clark defeated rival Clay County, which finished second. Owsley County finished third. Alex White led the boys team with a first-place finish in both the mile- and two-mile run. White was also a member of the 4x800 relay team that placed first. Joining White on the relay team were Cody Cox, James Banks and Brandon Bailey. Mark Davis placed first in both the 30-meter dash and the 400-meter dash.

The George Rogers Clark Cross Country team competed in the Kentucky River Conference championships, with the boys team repeating as conference winners for the fifth year in a row, while the girls team claimed their fourth consecutive title. Alex White, the conference reigning champion, repeated as the individual conference champion. On a rain soaked course, White ran the course in 17:46.70. White was followed by teammates Grayson Brookshire (18:08.71), Ben Petrey (19:08.20)

The Winchester Board of Commissioners Tuesday adopted second readings of an ordinance amending the 2012 fiscal year budget and an ordinance to regulate the sale and discharge of fireworks in the city. The estimated balances at the end of the fiscal year, June 30, decreased both for the city's general fund and its capital equipment fund. The estimated balance of the general fund decreased $48,000 from $3.026 million to $2.978 million. The estimated balance of the capital equipment fund decreased $150,900 from $1.648 million to $1.497 million.

The George Rogers Clark cross country team made history during the regional track meet Saturday at Cave Run Event Park in Wayne County. For the first time since 1980, the Cardinals finished in the top tier of teams and advances to the state meet that will be held at Saturday at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington. The Cardinals finished third out of 10 teams, behind winner Pulaski County and North Laurel. Clark junior Alex White captured the individual title with a regional meet record finish of 16:44.

More than 300 runners converged on Lykins Park Saturday and competed in the sixth-annual George Rogers Clark Coaches Classic. A total of 15 varsity teams competed in the one-day event, with the Cardinals finishing in first place, followed by a fourth-place finish by the Lady Cardinals. In the final boys standings, Clark finished with 59 points, followed by Southwestern (72), Madison Central (105), Mason County (116), South Laurel (146), Powell County (150), Bath County (158)
