Dear Editor, Not having a grocery store on Main Street in Danville has dampened the flow of folks who patronized those when they were there. It has made it hard on many people getting to the grocery store since they have been moved or done away with. We also were shocked when we found out that Captain D's had closed and that the building had been sold. Will there be another one built in Danville? All of the fish lovers really liked Captain D's. It would be great to see more of the vacant buildings have some kind of business in them.

It's been said that bad news sells newspapers. I don't know how many papers we've been selling lately, but I know many editions have been carrying a lot of bad news about the economy. Believe it or not, no one I know in our newsroom has taken pleasure in reporting the layoffs, plant shutdowns and store closings in our area that have been making front page headlines all too frequently over the last several weeks. In other words, the bad economy is not a happy beat. It's an unhappy beat not just because of the impact plant layoffs and store closings have on our own livelihoods.

Rumors have been flying in the community for several days that local schools would be closing due to the number of students out sick with the H1N1 virus. But for those who thought they would get a head start on next week's fall break, that's not the case. According to Superintendent Lu Young, some of the rumors may have come from the fact that some elementary school teachers began sending home "work packets" which children can use in case of an extend school closure, much like those used for snow days.

100 years ago — 1911 Perryville was visited by a vicious mad dog last night. All night long, residents were awakened by the yelping of dogs and it’s estimated that at least 50 dogs were bitten. The big, brown setter was extremely vicious and even attacked Jesse Webb, but he successfully beat it away before he was bitten. The mad dog approached the store of J.L. Penny, and a posse of men headed by Marshal Greer pursued the dog out the Mackville Pike near the old toll house where it was shot eight times and killed.

The Winchester YMCA is in need of new memberships, and in a hurry. Without a plan for sustainability, which would include increasing memberships by about 350 families, the local chapter will likely have to close the doors, according to Michael Haynes, acting director. Haynes is a retired state YMCA official who now works with what he terms “troubled” facilities throughout the state, helping them develop plans for long-term success and financial stability. He has been working in Winchester since May 8. Right now, Haynes said, he and the Winchester YMCA Board of Directors are working on a plan to help generate about $150,000 of additional income each year.

Counterfeiting is a serious problem in our world today. Counterfeiters go to great lengths to produce fraudulent clothing, electronics and currency. Have you ever seen a counterfeit 200 dollar bill? No, of course not, there is no such thing as a 200 dollar bill. A counterfeiter does everything he can to work in all the details of an authentic dollar bill.  The most commonly counterfeited currency in the world is the American 20 dollar bill. The bank teller or merchant that is trained to identify a phony, is not trained to know what fakes look like, but in what the real dollar bill looks like.
