Only one of its three buildings remains, but in its heyday the Colby Tavern was considered the most important rural tavern in Kentucky. It opened in July 1822 on Colby Pike, the favorite route for businessmen and lawyers traveling from Lexington to Winchester or even on to Mount Sterling or Olympia Springs. Henry Clay and many others would spend the night at the tavern, and then continue on their journey to Winchester. Originally constructed by Colby Taylor, today it is owned by Dr. Marc Ford and his wife, Cindy, who discussed the tavern at Thursday night's monthly Second Thursday program at the Bluegrass Heritage Museum.
