He's not exactly sure what might come from taking part in two national high school football combines, but Boyle County senior lineman Trey Yeager figures there is no downside for him. “It's a good way to gauge myself against players from other parts of the country and also get my name out to more college coaches,” said Yeager. He was in Canton, Ohio, over the weekend for the Blue-Gray Combine that could lead to an invitation to the Blue-Gray National High School Football Classic.

Sean Donaldson made his college choice official on Monday. The West Jessamine senior signed a national letter of intent to play football at the University of Pikeville. In his first day on the job, George Rogers Clark football coach Steve Collins was tracking collegiate possibilities for senior Pokey Harris. “I've got his film in front of me right now,” Collins said earlier this week. “I ran into him in the hallway when I was here last week and asked him about it (his recruitment) and I just want to get the ball rolling in case he got overlooked (in the recruiting process) and try to get him on to the next level.” Although Collins coached against Harris during the past two seasons as offensive coordinator at the Montgomery County, the newly-hired Clark coach was preparing recruiting information on Harris for his friend, University of Louisville assistant coach Brian Jean-Mary.

Rex Burkhead picked up the knickname “Superman” back in high school when he was running roughshod through opponents in Texas. No wonder. He rushed for 3,530 yards and 57 touchdowns in his final two years of play at Plano High School. But “Superman' isn't his favorite nickname, but oh well. Whatever. Burkhead isn't going to get all excited over it. “I'm more of a Batman fan,” Burkhead said, “but it's cool though.” Everything is cool with Burkhead, and the Nebraska junior I-back plans to stay cool while he's stepping up to do whatever is necessary.

Bryan Station offensive lineman Darrien Miller gave an early verbal commitment to Kentucky and reamins on track to sign with the Wildcats on Feb. 2. He offered several insights into his recruiting before he played in the National Guard Border Bowl last weekend in Williamsburg: Question: Was there ever a time this season when you wavered on your commitment to Kentucky? Miller: “I am solid. The way I was raised, when you say you are going to do something, you are supposed to do it. For me to commit to Kentucky and then de-commit just because they were not doing well goes against what I believe and would not be fair.

LEXINGTON — Just because he was a hometown product didn’t get Winston Guy any breaks from his older teammates when he came to Kentucky. Guy originally gave a verbal commitment to Arkansas before the Lexington Catholic product decided to play for the Wildcats. Going into Saturday’s game with Charleston Southern, UK’s starting safety has a team-high two interceptions and is second on the team with 56 tackles. “A lot of out-of-state people come here, and have been here for several years and they are really tough on the younger guys.
