U.S. Rep. Brett Guthrie is a relative newcomer to these parts, so the Bowling Green Republican had a fresh audience Thursday at the Danville Country Club for his “Why I ran for Congress” story. He credited wild child actress Lindsay Lohan. Guthrie said he was in China on a business trip in 2007 as the country was preparing for the upcoming Summer Olympics. He counted 30 cranes at work in Shanghai as his host told him of China's plans to claim its destiny as the center of the world's trade and culture.

The Danville-Boyle County Chamber of Commerce supports the decision of the Danville City Commission to include residents on the committee for the city manager selection process. We encourage the commission to select qualified individuals to serve as active participants on the search committee. This should include people with appropriate knowledge of our city manager/commission form of government who are informed on the issues facing our city.   People with experience in human resources and professional searches would be a definite plus, as well.

The Treasury Saturday night announced the second 10-year extension of maturity for these bonds. About 10 million Americans hold them. The first of the bonds will be 20-years-old May 1, and thereafter will earn 3-3/4 percent interest if held for another 10 years. A team from the Community Development Division of the Kentucky Department of Economic Development headed by Neil S. McFarren, Frankfort, will be in Winchester Wednesday and Thursday.

In a speech on the United States Senate floor, Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., joked that the definition of the Constitution’s Commerce Clause had expanded so much during the past 70 years that “you can drive a truck through it now, it’s so big.” The Commerce Clause enables Congress “to regulate commerce with foreign nations, and among the several states, and with the Indian tribes.” Congress often sidesteps the 10th Amendment — states’ rights — by using the Commerce Clause to justify interfering in the activities of states and their citizens.

Editor’s note: The following was taken from a speech delivered by Danville-Boyle County Chamber of Commerce President Mike Perros at the organization’s annual awards ceremony. The retrospective is published here for those who were not present. This past year, your Chamber has taken a critical look from within, reviewing our activities as to their effectiveness in furthering the mission of the Chamber. The previous Chamber banquets were clearly losing their steam, and so we decided it was time to do something different.
