HARRODSBURG - Albert Mueller was wearing a pair of jeans but he wasn't sporting spurs, chaps, boots or a 10-gallon hat. In other words, he didn't look like a cowboy. Let the record show that Mueller isn't a cowboy but he is head of a board that oversees Harrodsburg's newest church - the Commonwealth Cowboy Church. And while he doesn't herd cattle, he does ride horses. And his love of horses - and concern for the spiritual lives of others who share his equine passion - is behind the rather whimsical name of the new church.

There was an obvious void in the congregation of Stanford Christian Church Sunday. The pew occupied for years by Leroy Boone Sr., his wife, Nancy, and son, Leroy Jr., was vacant of any family members at the morning worship service. Boone lost his battle with cancer Saturday at his home. Few words were spoken of Boone's passing during the service; instead, the congregation decided to help fill the void by doing what Stanford Christian Church's "music man" loved most - raising their voices in song.

Community Missionary Church, located at 702 E. Main St. in Wilmore, has a rich history in Jessamine County. Prior to being built in 1958, the church, founded by the Rev. Lee Dock, first met in Bolar Chapel and then in a house. The construction of the building was led by Amos Greer with a crew of volunteers from the congregation. Inside the yellow brick structure is a tongue-and-groove pine sanctuary with an arched, cathedral-style ceiling. A prayer wall in the rear of the sanctuary gives place to prayer requests and reports of answered prayers, as does a basket of typed requests that is passed around for each member to take and, silently, pray for. The church adds to its prayer ministry the tradition of placing a yellow rose on the communion table when praise reports are given for answered prayers.

For nearly 100 years, the members of Providence Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) gathered in a stately, columned building which fronted Nicholasville Road. Now, almost a year after that building was demolished to make way for construction of Brannon Crossings shopping center, the members of Providence will take occupancy of a new, larger facility located on East Brannon Road and Providence Way. On Wednesday, Nov. 21, the members of Providence opened the doors of the new church building to welcome members of the community for an ecumenical Thanksgiving service.
