WINCHESTER ROTARY CLUB The Winchester Rotary Club will meet at noon Friday at the Winchester Country Cub. University of Kentucky Baseball Coach John Cohen will be speaker. Cohen has been named Southeastern Conference Coach of the Year and also has been recognized by the College Coaches Association. He will be introduced by Bob Sloat. HUMAN SERVICE COUNCIL The Clark County Human Service Council will meet at noon Tuesday, Sept. 18, in the meeting room at Arby's.

June 16, 1983 CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) - Five astronauts, including America's first space-faring woman, conducted launch site training today after countdown began for Saturday's early morning blast-off. There was one early technical problem aboard Challenger, but the space agency said it may have been a false alarm. In any event, the problem went away. A brief history of flags in America was presented at Wednesday's luncheon meeting of the Kiwanis Club by Robert F. Collins.

Mahan Manor, now Blackfish Hunt and Golf Club, is ready to kick off the sports season at the University of Kentucky. The course will host a UK Sports kickoff Glowball event Saturday. The cost is $60 per player and $240 per team. Registration and warm-up will be from 5-6 p.m., a twilight 9-hole scramble from 6-8:15 p.m., a cookout with live music by the “The Velvet Water Band” from 8:15-9:30 p.m. and a 9-hole glow ball scramble at 9:30 p.m. Prizes will be awarded to the top three teams.

LANCASTER - The 22nd annual Garrard County Tobacco Cutting Contest is scheduled for Aug. 28 on Kent Wall's Hamm Hill farm in the Mount Heboron community. A beef burger cookout will be served at noon, and the competition will begin about 1 p.m. The farm is 10 miles north of Lancaster just off Ky. 1355 - Sugar Creek/Hamm Hill Road. The event is conducted by the Tobacco Advisory Committee of the Garrard County Cooperative Extension Service and is sponsored by contributions from local businesses, financial institutions and area tobacco warehouses.

The Clark County Fall Roundup, an annual party and cookout at Stock Farm on Van Meter Road, will be held on Friday, Sept. 19, beginning at 5:30 p.m. David Hunt, one of more than 80 hosts of the gathering, said the meal will consist of pork chops, baked beans and cooked apples, will be paid for by sponsors, as will a wet bar and "beer wagon," so admission is free. The party, which is open to the public, is for adults only. In the past, the Fall Roundup many political candidates used the event as an opportunity to campaign, but organizers no longer allow candidates or their volunteers to distribute literature, and there are no speeches.

After 22 years of service with the Kentucky State Police, Christopher J. Lanham, spokesman for Post 7 in Richmond, has announced his retirement, effective July 31. Lanham has been community relations officer at the Richmond post since September 2003. He was assigned to the post in 1996 and prior to that worked at Post 6 in Dry Ridge and Post 9 in Pikeville.   He was promoted to Trooper First Class in 2005 and Master Trooper in 2010 and has received several awards for his service to KSP. Post 7 employees will host a potluck cookout in his honor at 11:30 a.m. July 22 at the Richmond post.

East Jessamine football boosters to host cookout> br> The East Jessamine football boosters will hold a cookout July 20 at 6:30 p.m. at the school. This is for all football players and parents to meet and eat and pay camp fees. For more information, call 492-5692. East holding soccer camp, tryouts > br> East Jessamine is hosting a soccer camp for boys and girls 10 and up, from July 10-14. The girls will run from 5 to 7 p.m. each night, and the boys will run from 7 to 9 p.m. each night.

Kiddville Road closures under way next week The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, Department of Highways announced that road closures for Kiddville Rd., KY 974, in Clark County have been rescheduled. Work to replace drainage pipe from mile point 20.26 to mile point 22.524 will be done between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. each day from Monday, March 21, to Friday March 25. Sekisui cookout for victims of earthquake Sekisui will be having a cookout in front of the Winchester Walmart today from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. to raise money for the people of Japan.
