Konnor Hill had the only win for the Danville boys in an 8-1 loss to Corbin on Wednesday at Danville. Hill won a tiebreaker to take the No. 6 singles match. “We made some strides,” Danville coach Mark Mojesky said. “Our No. 1 doubles team (Sam Nelson and Josh Joiner) lost 8-2, but had chances to make it much closer. James “J. B.” Steele, 83, of Winchester, companion for 30 years to Marie Blevins, passed away Saturday at the Clark Regional Medical Center. A native of Corbin, he was born April 19, 1929, to the late Bert and Deborah Hyde Steele. He was a retired railroad worker. He is survived by two sons, Wayne (Becky) Steele of Winchester, Bert Steele of Nicholsaville; two daughters, Wanda (Larry) Steele Herron of London, Jessica Steele of Ohio; brother, Lewis (Cheryl) Steele of California; niece, Donna Lindy of Winchester; nephew, James (Violet)

Donald Joseph Murphy, 79, of Nicholasville passed away Thursday, Nov. 29, at Oak Tree Hospital in Corbin. He was a U.S. Marine veteran and had retired from Trane of Lexington. Donald was preceded in death by his parents and wife Diana Evans Murphy. He is survived by his son, Dr. Michael Murphy and wife Diane, and grandchildren, Bennett and Marit Murphy. Private services will be held by the family. Arrangements by the Vankirk-Grisell Funeral Home in Corbin.

David L. Richie, 50, of Waynesburg, died Thursday, Oct. 25, at his home. Born July 24, 1962, in Lexington, David was the son of Ruth Edwards Richie of Danville and the late Russell Richie, Jr. He attended Fork Union Military Academy in Virginia as a freshman in high school, was a 1980 graduate of Lincoln County High School and attended Eastern Kentucky University. David was a color technician on D Crew at RR Donnelly in Danville where he worked for over 18 years, was the owner/operator of DL Richie Trucking and a veteran of the Air National Guard.

Casey County spotted Corbin 42 points en route to a 57-22 loss in its regular-season finale Friday night at Liberty. The loss sent the Rebels (3-7, 1-3 District AAA-4)¿into fourth place in their district. Corbin scored 93 seconds into the game, then returned a fumble - the first of four Casey turnovers - ¿for a touchdown to take a 14-0 lead after just 4:10. The Redhounds (4-5, 2-2) scored six touchdowns in the first 21:04, but the Rebels outscored them three touchdowns to two in the second half.

Oct. 11, 1987 Sophomore halfback Eric Robertson of the George Rogers Clark Cardinals pulled down a pass as junior Shawn Elliott of Corbin defended Friday night in Corbin. The Cards dropped a 25-24 decision to the Redhounds. Helen Hayes will visit Lexington in October to help the University of Kentucky College of Fine Arts launch its first fund drive. Miss Hayes will be the guest artist at a benefit performance for the college on Wednesday, Oct. 21. LOUISVILLE (AP)¿ - The tobacco industry is expected to experience its biggest cigarette production year since 1982 due to a dramatic increase in 1987 exports.

All week Danville coach Sam Harp feared that his team was still celebrating a win over Boyle County way too much. Friday night he found out he was exactly right. The host Admirals gave up an nine-play, 80-yard touchdown drive to open the game and had to hold on in the closing minutes to beat Corbin 28-21 at Admiral Stadium thanks in large part to quarterback Devonta Alcorn, who ran for 95 yards and two scores and threw for 118 yards and another touchdown. “It was a win, but we sure were flat,” said Harp.

The George Rogers Clark High School football team won't have to take another road trip this week. After opening the season with a road loss at Corbin, followed by a setback to neighboring Montgomery County last week with an open date sandwiched in between, the Cardinals will play their first home game of the year against Bryan Station Friday night at Cardinal Stadium. “Its going to be great to be home, it really is,” Clark coach Steven Collins said earlier this week. “You get some familiarity (by playing)

It was one of the biggest wins Danville has had in recent years, but it's ancient history to Sam Harp. And the Danville coach said he believes the Admirals are taking the same approach this week in practice and will continue to do so Friday when they host Corbin in the first game following their win over Boyle County last week. Danville's 28-21 victory in the crosstown rivalry was cause for celebration for the Admirals and their fans, but almost immediately after the game Harp and his assistants began emphasizing the importance of moving on, and he thinks the players have responded to that message.

David Wesley Ramsey, 74, of Science Hill, passed away Friday, Aug. 31, at Somerwoods Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Born April 17, 1938, in Eubank, David was a son of the late Rowen Wesley and Ula Vivian Moore Ramsey. He was a welder and attended Floyd Switch Baptist Church. He was also preceded in death by one sister, Cora Mae Eldridge. Survivors include his wife, Peggy Howell Ramsey of Science Hill; four sons, Gary and Jerry Ramsey, both of Somerset, Larry Ramsey of Lexington and David Ramsey Jr. of Science Hill; two daughters, Sherry Ramsey of Corbin and Susan Jasper of Somerset; two step children, Michelle Bolin of Somerset and Vernon Barnes of Mt. Victory; two brothers, James and Edward Ramsey, both of Indiana; seven sisters, Margaret Padgett of Norwood, Ohio, Katherine Asberry of Lancaster, Irene Duncan of Versailles, Betty Ramsey of Somerset, Wanda Cummins of Frankfort, Brenda Luttrell of Casey County and Linda Gregory of Science Hill; six grandchildren; four step grandchildren; and one step great grandchild.
