Linda Diane Lewis Griffin, 63, of Nicholasville, formerly of London, Ky., died Wednesday, Sept. 22, 2010. Born May 29, 1947, she was the daughter of Sudie L. Lewis, of London, Ky., and the late Eliga Lee Lewis. She worked several years as a legal secretary in Corbin for the former law offices of Trimble and Mann. She will be missed by family and friends for her wit and approach to life. She is also survived by her husband, Cecil Griffin; two sons, Darrell and wife Marisa Greer, and Eric L. and wife Kay Greer, both of Corbin; one daughter, Rebecca Karen and husband Chris Taylor of Washington D.C.; two step-sons, Timmy and Terry Griffin, both of Harrodsburg; one step-daughter, Crystal and husband Robert Gadberry of Kings Mountain; nine grandchildren, Amanda Diane Henninger, Emily and Elizabeth Greer, Ayden Shepard, Camille and Ian Elijah Greer, Victoria and Tristan Gadberry, and Amber Griffin; one brother, Alan Lewis, and two sisters, Tammy Chandler and Elaine Vaughn, all of London.

HARRODSBURG - The Mercer County Senior League All-Stars rallied from a 7-0 deficit to defeat Corbin for the second time in two days to win their state tournament Monday night. Mercer won 9-7 to advance to the Central Regional Aug. 5-10 in Peru, Ill., where it will compete against teams from eight states for a berth in the Senior League World Series. Mercer won four straight games in the tournament after losing its opener to Corbin. The team beat Corbin 11-1 Sunday night in the first championship game of the double-elimination tournament at Mercer County High School.

George Rogers Clark left the field dancing. The Cardinals celebrated homecoming in successful fashion and kept their perfect home record intact with an exciting 35-30 upset over Corbin Friday night at Cardinal Stadium. Coming off a 40-0 loss at Scott County last week, Clark made a proverbial statement by handing Corbin its first loss of the season. The Redhounds entered the contest undefeated at 5-0 and ranked No. 2 in the Associated Press Class 2A poll. "We needed it," Clark coach Paul Columbia said after his team snapped the Redhounds' 24-game regular-season winning streak.

Oct. 11, 1987 Sophomore halfback Eric Robertson of the George Rogers Clark Cardinals pulled down a pass as junior Shawn Elliott of Corbin defended Friday night in Corbin. The Cards dropped a 25-24 decision to the Redhounds. Helen Hayes will visit Lexington in October to help the University of Kentucky College of Fine Arts launch its first fund drive. Miss Hayes will be the guest artist at a benefit performance for the college on Wednesday, Oct. 21. LOUISVILLE (AP)¿ - The tobacco industry is expected to experience its biggest cigarette production year since 1982 due to a dramatic increase in 1987 exports.

Richard Marion Colyer, 65, a U.S. Marine veteran having served during the Vietnam War, died at the VA Hospital in Lexington on Sunday, Aug. 14.  He is the son of Richard W. Colyer of Florida and  the late Elizabeth K. Colyer. During his time in the Marines, he was awarded numerous medals. He was a member of  Trinity Tabernacle Baptist Church in Corbin and the DAV, and was  a Kentucky Colonel. In addition to his father, survivors include two daughters, Antionia  Jordan of Garrison and Tammy Holt of Corbin; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and  brother Gary Colyer.

Mr. and Mrs. Robert Steele of Paris announce the engagement of their daughter, Sarah Steele, to Eddie Watkins, son of Steve Watkins of Corbin and Julie Caskey of Paris. Sarah is employed at Arby's in Winchester as a manager. Eddie is employed at Clearbrooke Farm. The wedding will take place Saturday, May 16, at 2 p.m. at the Clintonville Christian Church in Paris.

Joyce Baber Haggard and Eugene Hampton, both of Winchester, announce their engagement. The bride-elect, a graduate of Madison Central High School in Richmond, is the daughter of Claude "Buddy" Baber of Winchester and Mary Buckner of Corbin. Mr. Hampton is the son of Danny Hampton of Winchester and Lydia Turley of Lexington. A graduate of George Rogers Clark High School, he is employed by NHS. A September wedding is planned.

The Danville boys defeated Corbin 4-0 to win the 15th/16th Region All "A" Classic on Saturday night at Admiral Stadium. The Admirals (4-2) did not allow a goal in the tournament for the second straight year. They will advance to the All "A" state tournament Sept. 15-16 in Frankfort. "I am excited for the boys to get this win. They set a goal to win the Class A state cup this year, and we are now one step closer," Danville coach Brent Beauman said. "If we can continue this momentum and hard work, we will have a good chance of reaching that goal.

CRESTWOOD - The Lincoln County girls' offense went cold in a 61-27 loss to Corbin on Wednesday in the fifth-place game of the South Oldham Holiday Tournament. Lincoln (3-8) managed just six points in the first quarter and trailed 30-18 at halftime, and the Lady Patriots scored just five points in the first 13 minutes of the second half. "We didn't get many shots," Lincoln coach John Kolasa said. "Corbin just dismantled us in a lot of ways. We got in some early foul trouble, and then we couldn't score.
