CRAB ORCHARD - An investigation into a Lincoln County man who shot his granddaughter in the leg Thursday morning has led to the arrest of the man's son for possession of more than $10,000 worth of stolen property. David Brummett, 45, has been charged with two counts of receiving stolen property, after Kentucky State Police found construction equipment - including a Bobcat and six trailers - and more than 130 firearms at his house on Simpson Road in the Crab Orchard area, KSP spokesman Trooper Paul Blanton said.

CRAB ORCHARD - A Lincoln County man who was arrested last week after state police found tens of thousands of dollars worth of stolen items on his property was arrested again Tuesday after more stolen property was confiscated from his land. David Brummett, 45, of Simpson Road in the Crab Orchard area, has been charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and possession of a handgun by a convicted felon. He has been lodged in the Lincoln County Regional Jail without the option of bonding out. Brummett's adjacent home and business properties became the scene of an investigation by state police last week after Brummett's father shot himself in the head on the land.

CRAB ORCHARD - A man attempting to rob a Crab Orchard store Wednesday morning didn't make it very far. “He was apprehended within five minutes of walking out the door,” Lincoln County Sheriff Curt Folger said. Chad Bennett, 31, walked into D&M Market on Stanford Street about 10 a.m. Wednesday, advised the female clerk he had a gun and demanded cash from the register, Folger said. However, the clerk refused to hand over any money. “I think she was going to whip his butt,” Folger said.

CRAB ORCHARD — Not long after taking office in January, Crab Orchard Mayor Billy Shelton began to suspect things weren’t adding up with the city’s finances. “We came in to the office and started noticing missing money, more or less on a weekly basis,” Shelton said. Shelton called in Kentucky State Police, which is continuing an investigation into the missing funds. The city’s auditor, CPA Craig Butler of Danville, also has been made aware of the situation.

As of 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 19, the city of Crab Orchard Waterworks has issued a boil water advisory until further notice for all customers on the entire Crab Orchard water system. This advisory is due to a recent waterline break, which has the potential to allow contaminants to enter the water. Customers of the Crab Orchard water system are asked to boil water before drinking or cooking.

CRAB ORCHARD - A boil water advisory has been issued for customers of the Crab Orchard water system on South Elm and West Maple streets until further notice. The advisory was issued as of 3:23 p.m. Wednesday as a result of a recent waterline break that has the potential to allow contaminants to enter the water system. Customers are advised to boil water before cooking or drinking.

CRAB ORCHARD - Two Crab Orchard residents were arrested Friday on charges they were trafficking in oxycodone pills. Tabitha Whitehead, 26, and Jason Whitehead, 29, were charged with first-degree trafficking in a controlled substance. Lincoln County Sheriff Curt Folger said the arrests came after an investigation by the sheriff's office into drugs being sold at their West Street residence. Tabitha and Jason Whitehead were being held in the Lincoln County Regional Jail on $25,000 cash bonds as of Tuesday night.

University of the Cumberlands, Williamsburg - Angel Smith, of Crab Orchard, was presented the Human Services Award April 22 during the 54th annual Honors Day Program.  The award winner in the Department of Human Services is selected based on GPA, commitment to the department, and service to the university and community.  She also was named to the university's high honor roll. Students recognized for the honor must attain a minimum of 3.85 cumulative grade point average standing.

Janet Ann Bono Dory, 80, of Crab Orchard,  died Saturday, May 11 at the Fort Logan Hospital in Stanford. Born March 3, 1933, in Cincinnati, Ohio, Janet was a  daughter of the late Mary  Francis (Roma) and John Robert Bono. She was a retired certified nursing assistant and a member of the Catholic Church.  She was also preceded in death by her husbands, Robert  Roeller and Robert Dory; a son, John Robert Roeller; and four brothers, John, Donald, Alfred and Joseph Bono. Survivors include four children, Thomas F. (Venus)

CRAB ORCHARD - The Lincoln County man who allegedly shot his granddaughter before shooting himself in the head Thursday morning remains in a Lexington hospital today but is expected to recover from his wound. Trooper Paul Blanton, spokesman for Kentucky State Police Post 7 in Richmond, said Danny Brummett will likely be charged with attempted murder and/or first-degree assault and other possible charges later today as his condition improves at the University of Kentucky Medical Center.

CRAB ORCHARD - A Lincoln County man is receiving treatment in a hospital after shooting his granddaughter and shooting at his wife before turning the gun on himself. According to police, Danny Brummett, 66, shot his granddaughter, Monique Brummett, 18, early Thursday morning at a trailer on Simpson Road in the Crab Orchard Area. He also shot at his wife, Kay Brummett, before traveling half a mile to his son's house and shooting himself, Lincoln County Sheriff Curt Folger said.

CRAB ORCHARD - A new phone alert system for the Crab Orchard area has the potential to improve communication about boil water advisories and other emergencies. Crab Orchard City Commissioner Randall Price said the "Call Em All"-brand system is allowing the city to call an entire database of phone numbers with a prerecorded message for 9 cents per phone number. After a month and a half of working to get the system in place, officials sent out an alert for the first time last week.

Barbara "Bob" Burgin Leigh, 92, of Stanford, died Monday, April 15, at Golden Living Center in Stanford.   Born June 29, 1920, in Crab Orchard, Barbara was a daughter of the late Dr. Welby Wilson Burgin and Bettie Edminston Burgin. She was a retired nurse having worked at Stanford Hospital for 35 years and also as a private duty nurse. Barbara was a member of Stanford Baptist Church, a past member of the Democrat Women and the widow of C. James "Bug" Leigh, Jr.  Survivors include a son, James Burgin Leigh of Paris; a daughter, Jamie Brandt Leigh of Stanford; and two grandchildren, Natalie Brandt Leigh and Devon Redmon Leigh.

Joseph Michael Johnson, 36, of Crab Orchard, passed away Thursday, April 11,  at U.K. Hospital in Lexington.  Born Dec. 6, 1976, Joseph was the son of Rebecca Hall and the late Michael Dale Johnson. He worked as a factory worker for several years, was self-employed for the last few years, and loved working with junk cars in his spare time. Other survivors include his wife of nine years, Melissa Anne Johnson of Harrodsburg; a son, Joseph Kaleb Johnson of Harrodsburg;  one step-son, Blake Gullett of Harrodsburg; one daughter, Gabrielle Brooke Johnson of Harrodsburg; two brothers, Michael Dale (Kim)
