June 1, 1987 Georgia Vegetable Co.'s recent decision not to aerially spray its crops with insecticides may have produced a sigh of relief in the Becknerville area, but the action was both unnecessary and disappointing, the owner of a Florida-based crop dusting service said. Jerry White, owner of J&M Flying Service in Orlando, Fla., agreed two months ago to provide crop dusting services to GVC after discussion with GVC farm manager Gary Voelkel. The Indians ripped the Dodgers 15-6 and the Red Sox downed the Cubs 10-5 in Winchester Little League action Friday night at Lykins Park.

In 30 years of farming, David LeMaster said he has seen few corn crops as bad as this year's. Despite recent rains and slightly cooler temperatures, for most local corn growers, it's too little, too late. “It's kind of bleak right now,”¿LeMaster said. A tenant farmer, LeMaster has crops scattered across Clark and Bourbon counties. Most of his corn is located on Prewitt Pike, near the Clark-Montgomery county line. In a best case scenario, he expects to yield about 30 bushels from his 100 acres of corn this year.

Crop producers pay less attention to combating weed problems during the fall and early winter months. However, this is an optimum time to critically evaluate successes and failures of the past season and make plans for the upcoming growing season. It is a good time of year to consider what weed control strategies worked and what options did not perform up to expectations during the growing season, and why. Where control practices failed, you may want to consider what weed problems or escapes occurred in the field, if these weed species are annuals or perennials, and whether they are reoccurring problems.

Procrastination is a big word. There is a good definition in the dictionary, but what it boils down to is not doing what you should have done as early as you should have done it. I have at least gone to put up a blind by now, but I must admit there are so many other things taking priority now that I haven't had the wherewithal go about getting things done that would normally have been done a month ago. I haven't squirrel hunted, even after...

In addition to looking out for the welfare of the residents of District 4, Magistrate Joseph Stanley has been hard at work stripping his tobacco, working from nine in the morning, till four in the evening. He has approximately 37,000 lbs. of tobacco to strip and send off to market in November. Stanley has a contract with Philip Morris and this year the market is in Danville, instead of Lebanon. There have been less people growing tobacco since the government buyout about ten years ago, but those who do still grow seem to grow a lot of it, Stanley said.
