The Blue Building at City-County Park has been used for many events from family reunions to wrestling. But on Saturday, it was transformed into the “Blue Building Speedway” as 47 Cub Scouts from Pack 45 hit the track for their annual pinewood-derby event. In a pinewood derby, “drivers” cannot offer excuses about tire pressures, blown engines or another driver wrecking in front of them; it all comes down to each car's preparation, and, of course, gravity. But more importantly for the members of Pack 45, it was a chance to have fun. Pinewood committee co-chair and Tiger den leader Darrell Jordan said because the cars have to be put together from a kit, it turns out to be a family event.

I’ve worked at The Winchester Sun about a month now, and while there have been a few bizarre moments, there sure haven’t been any dull ones. The members of Cub Scout Pack 45 in Nicholasville and their families rolled down to the Blue Building at City-County Park on Saturday for the annual pinewood derby, when scouts’ homemade wooden cars race each other down the track in heats lasting only a few seconds. Each car raced in three different heats, getting a shot at each track. The top five cars in speed and design — judged by four local officials, including an art teacher — got a chance to move on to a regional event in Richmond.

This year, nobody needs to remind you that it’s winter. If you don’t live it first-hand, you hear about it: mountains of snow, frozen cars, winds that cut sideways and cold air that literally takes your breath away. Yep, it’s winter. But look on the bright side. It might be cold, but at least you can walk around outside without worrying about being killed and eaten. You don’t have to keep your eyes peeled for creatures that are almost taller than a house, either.
