LEXINGTON — Danny Trevathan has shown he can be a playmaker. Now the junior linebacker has to show he can also be a leader for Kentucky. Trevathan is Kentucky’s top returning tackler, even though he played most of last season with a cast on his hand to protect his broken wrist. He was named UK’s most improved defensive player by the coaches after making 82 stops — the second most on the team. Now he’s being counted on to lead a quicker, but less experienced defensive unit.

LEXINGTON ? Corey Peters was puzzled by Mississippi State's offensive showing following Kentucky's 31-24 loss to the Bulldogs Saturday night at Commonwealth Stadium. Peters wasn't caught off-guard by Mississippi State's schemes, but was surprised the Wildcats couldn't stop the Bulldogs, especially in the back field. "We were prepared," Peters said. "We knew they were going to run the ball. " That's exactly what the guests did to the Cats on a night designated for trick or treats and it was Mississippi State that delivered the goods to their fans in a must-win encounter for both teams.

LEXINGTON ? As speculation continues to center on how Kentucky quarterback Mike Hartline has played, head coach Rich Brooks knows that his receivers have to become more consistent playmakers no matter who the quarterback is. Sophomore Randall Cobb has a team-high 21 catches for 248 yards, an average of 11.8 yards per catch. Junior college transfer Chris Matthews, who was expected to be a big-play receiver, had 14 receptions for 127 yards, an average of 9.1 per play. Running back Derrick Locke is the only other player with at least 10 catches after four games.
