Dear Editor, I commend the Heart of Danville for its recent downtown cleanup. It was a noticeable improvement. Business owners/managers used to keep the public areas in front of their respective businesses free of litter, windows washed and snow removed. It seems that this is no longer a regular practice. When everyone did their share, the downtown looked cared for and attractive. The south side of Main Street between Second and Third is especially conspicuous for the lack of attention by the businesses in this block.

The East Jessamine girls basketball team has taken its lumps this season - maybe one of its worst was a 69-26 loss to Danville on Tuesday night - but the Lady Jags have kept working and playing hard no matter what the score of the game. “They didn't (give up), and that's what I told them I was very proud of,” East Jessamine coach Jacqueline Coleman said. “(Danville) has been in our shoes before and played seventh-, eighth- and ninth-graders together and now they're upperclassmen.

It should come as no surprise to those with even a passing interest in Danville politics that it is not an uncommon thing for a newly-elected mayor (with a 3-2 majority) to make the replacement of the existing city manager his No. 1 priority. This has already occurred twice in this short century, if you will check your records, and a third attempt appears to be under way. One of the primary reasons given for maintaining our city manager form of government was to insulate this office from the rough and tumble of local politics.

Dear Editor, Recently, I received another trash container, along with instructions on how to use it. I think I have missed something along the line. According to the instructions, I am to sort all my garbage, washing those items that have residue, and place into the “blue” trash can those that can be sold. The blue can is to be emptied every two weeks, with the contents sent to Lexington for someone to sort and sell as recyclables. For this I am being charged on my water bill.

Dear Editor, Now that we are nearing the fall of the year we look back over the summer and see that many changes have come to Danville and this area. Driving down the streets of Danville we see liquor signs and money being spent making establishments enticing for those who want to partake it. This mars the image of Danville that I had 46 years ago when I first came to Boyle County. The first time there was a 4-inch snow on the ground. By the way, how many have catered to Durham’s Beauty School and have known that this makes four generations that have been a part of that?

I am very concerned about the turn our local politicians seem to be taking. Again, a new regime of elected city officials is trying to nullify the city manager form of government we voted overwhelmingly to retain just 21⁄2 years ago. I applaud the two commissioners who, earlier this week, walked out of an executive session that was clearly inappropriate and unnecessary, unless the goal was a witch hunt held behind closed doors. Where is the transparency so highly-touted six months ago during the election?

After Friday, for the first time in 28 years, Mike Thomas won’t count himself among those called on to answer when a tone goes out over the radio rallying firefighters to douse a blaze somewhere in Danville. The Danville fire chief is retiring after eight years as head of the department where he has worked for more than half his life. Thomas, who is eligible for retirement, said he felt it was time to give others the same opportunity for advancement in the ranks he got when he became chief in November 2002.
