The Kentucky School for the Deaf Foundation's Fill Up the Pool campaign continues, with the help of local artist Tillie Sowders, who has donated a Great American Brass Band Festival-themed painting in memory of her father, Joe Balasa. Sowders painted the 10- by 20-inch piece based on a photo she took during a previous Great American Brass Band Festival. It features the Circle City Sidewalk Stompers Clown Band. Balasa, who passed away in 1972 from complications following a car wreck, never had the opportunity to see the festival; however, he would have “loved every minute of it,” Sowders said.

It almost wouldn't be an All-Area team if Hannah Miniard was not included. The Boyle County senior has made The Advocate-Messenger All-Area Softball Team every year since she was an eighth-grader. She becomes the second player ever to appear on five teams along with Jessica Speake of Garrard County, who was voted to the All-Area team annually from 2006-10. Miniard has earned her fifth All-Area selection this year by going 16-3 with 199 strikeouts in 102 innings with an earned-run average of 0.75 for No. 12 Boyle, which takes a 28-8 record into its state tournament opener Thursday against Estill County in Owensboro.

“Phil” stands in a spotlight on Gravely Hall's stage, talking feverishly to his mustache that grew overnight. It speaks back to him in a Speedy Gonzalez voice. A well-spoken narrator fills the audience in on the story line, and a fourth, fifth and sixth voice chime in for dialogue. They all have different tones, different accents and character. Incredibly, they are all senior Jack Graham. Graham was showing off his skills in a humorous interpretation speech along with other Danville High School forensics team members during the senior spotlight in front of a riveted audience.

When he returned, both the pony and cart had disappeared. Sheriff Fox was notified and he gave the word to all officers in the surrounding counties about the incident. The constable at Dunnville in Casey County telephoned later and said a small boy driving a pony had just passed through the town. The constable followed the boy and captured him two miles this side of Russell Springs.
