I finally got motivated to get my bow off the rack and do some practicing. But along with the practicing was the realization that I didn't have a stand set up or even a blind in the woods. So I enlisted a friend to go with me to the property to help me choose a spot to erect my ground blind. We took our four-wheelers because of the distance from the cabin to the stand location. There is a shorter route, and if there is no objection from the property owner to my blind location, I will take that route.

Muzzleloader season for deer started yesterday and will run through this next week, and I still haven't been to the range to check out my rifle. Folks are telling me that the secondary rut is in now, and some good bucks are probably going to be taken in the muzzleloader season. When at the range Wednesday morning, there was a fellow trying to get his muzzleloaders lined out for the weekend. I wished him luck, as there was a crosswind that was blowing quite hard. However, right there at the range the wind was being blocked by the trees, and it wasn't too bad. He managed to hit his target, but was off quite a bit from the bulls eye with one of his two rifles.

I did a little something different last weekend. Sunrise Outfitters on Stanford Road had a customer appreciation day. Everything in the store was discounted 10 percent, and there was a ton of closeout fishing equipment and some deer hunting supplies lined up on tables outside. A cornhole game and a casting contest was set up in the parking lot. The casting contest was geared for kids ages 4-15. The casting contest was my responsibility, but as the day progressed I saw very few children take advantage of the opportunity to try out their casting skills.

Let me tell you about two things that happened last weekend that made me happy. I had read everything in the house worth reading so we went to the Salida library. It is not nearly as big as our library in Winchester, but it is pleasant, the staff is very helpful and it smells exactly like a library should smell. We parked right in front, got out and headed for the front door. At first, we failed to notice that standing right in front of the door was a beautiful deer. She was intent on nibbling on the large purple sage plant sitting just to the side of the door.

By Dorothea Schlappi Brrr ? the weather really did change, coldest we had this winter. There were quite a few people who were absent from St. Sylvester because of sickness. We wish all a speedy recovery. We had a visiting priest Sunday for our services, Pastor Thomas Thai. St. Sylvester welcomes him. Please watch for deer and turkey on Hwy. 643. There are no deer signs but there have been a few accidents from the deer jumping into or in front of vehicles. They can be seen in the day to avoid them but are hard to see at night until they are upon us. It begins at Halls Gap and goes all the way to Crab Orchard where they have been seen and hit. They can cause a lot of damage.

The sleeping bags and pillows cluttering the couches at the Bluegrass Sportsmen's League hunting lodge were indicative of a regular kids' sleepover. But the rifle rack next to the fireplace of the authentic 1940s fox hunting lodge on the league's property indicated this was more. On Oct. 13, 10 area youth gathered for a weekend-long hunting adventure, and one local hunter shot his first deer. As the weekend was coming to a close, West Jessamine Middle School student, 11-year-old Hunter Richardson, was determined to get something, and on Sunday around 9 a.m., his time came.
