GREENCASTLE, Ind. - The Centre College football team ran its record to 4-0 Saturday, forcing four DePauw turnovers and getting a balanced offensive attack for a 24-10 road win. “It was a very physical game. I thought the kids played well. Offensively, we did what we had to do. Our defense played real well,”¿Centre coach Andy Frye said. “It's always nice to win on the road, and it's hard to win when you're playing a team like DePauw.” Les Bolden highlighted the defense for the Colonels, returning a fumble 20 yards for a score in the fourth quarter.

The Centre women's golf team won its second tournament of the year Sunday at the DePauw Small College Classic in Clayton, Ind. The second day of play was cut in half, as bad weather conditions forced Sunday's round to only go nine holes. The Colonels managed to beat DePauw by four shots, posting a two-day score of 482, besting the 486 posted by DePauw. The two teams were all squared over today's nine holes. Centre had three players finish in the top five. Junior Whitney Miller finished third with a two-day score of 117, senior Emily Bachert finished fourth with a score of 120 and freshman Alyssa Brown finished fifth with a 121, good enough for fifth place.

DePauw connected on 54 percent of its shots in the second half and 45 percent overall as it handed Centre College only its second conference loss of the season 65-63 Saturday at Alumni Gymnasium. Centre, which won at DePauw 62-54 on Jan. 2, simply could not stop the Tigers from scoring when they needed to Saturday. The Colonels (15-4, 10-2 in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference), who had a four-game winning streak against the Tigers snapped with the loss, had a chance to go two games up in the loss column against the Tigers and Oglethorpe, but DePauw made all the plays they needed down the stretch to pull out. “Give all the credit to DePauw.

It doesn’t take a genius to figure out why DePauw University’s women, which is ranked 14th nationally by D3.com, is ranked so high. The NCAA Division III top-rated rebounding team outrebounded host Centre College 46-22 — including a 21-4 advantage on the offensive glass — and defeated the Colonels 67-54 Saturday at Alumni Gymnasium. DePauw (18-3, 11-1 in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference) was so dominant rebounding that they held a commanding 26-0 advantage on second chance points, and Centre coach Wendie Austin-Robinson said that was too much to overcome.

The Centre College men made the most of a limited number of shots and a strong defensive effort as they defeated DePauw 62-54 on Sunday at Greencastle, Ind. Centre had only 35 field-goal attempts but shot 51 percent, and it held DePauw to 34 percent, including 23 percent in the first half, when the Colonels built a 31-17 lead. The Colonels led by 17 points early in the second half, only to see DePauw slice the deficit to 55-51 with 1 minute, 8 seconds remaining. “We grinded it out, we hit enough free throws coming down the stretch and we took care of business,” Centre coach Greg Mason said.

Nobody is going to win the conference championship Saturday at Centre College, but somebody is probably going to lose it. Centre and Millsaps are on a collision course toward a common goal, and only one of them figures to remain on course after their meeting at Farris Stadium in the Colonels’ homecoming game. Both teams are stalking Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference leader DePauw in hopes of claiming a share of the league title. Both have to hope that DePauw, which has already beaten each of them, will stumble either this week at Trinity or in a later conference game, but it won’t matter nearly as much to the team that loses Saturday.

DePauw doesn’t have all-everything quarterback Spud Dick anymore, but Centre College coach Andy Frye knows plenty about his backup, Michael Engle. “He basically was the one who gave them momentum last year when he came in for Spud in the second half when he got hurt,” Frye said. “ He came in and led them on three scoring drives (with two touchdown passes in a 34-24 Centre win). He’s a good quarterback. The only thing he lacks is experience.” Engle, a senior, was 26 for 36 for 300 yards and six touchdowns last week as the Tigers, who were co-conference champions last season, opened with a 45-16 win over Rose-Hulman.
